Central Boiler / thermostatic valve?

I am plumbing in my new e classic 2400. Question I have, can I mount the thermostatic so the feed from the boiler and the return to the boiler are parallel (sideways) or do I have to plumb the way the diagram shows (vertical). Thank you for sharing your time
