General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Transfer Switch or Interlock Kit
« on: February 10, 2014, 05:09:25 PM »
i have mine like hondaracer with one exception, i pull the meter.
My brother in law is a lineman and it has their blessing.  he told me to call the electric coop and ask them to call me when the power came back on and they would put a new lock to replace the one I cut off.

At least that is how it works in semo, I know some places are a lot stricter

I wish I had to worry about snakes right now....   Any around here would be stiff as a board... :)

Fire Wood / Re: Splitting longer logs?

I do sort of like jerkash,  I stack mine in and usually have the little chunks and knots that pop off that I always have left over after splitting to fill in the empty spot.

My H2 Hardy I gave to my daughter and son in law last  year has ran for 17 years.  I switched to a H4 in the new house, I think my brother in law is at 20 or 21 years on his H2 across the pasture from me.

My wife broke her ankle and I am in charge of cooking etc.  What I fixed for supper made me slightly sick.  I didn't want to go all out and  puke, so I didn't watch it.............

I can't stand to listen to him

Hardy / Re: auto fill valve

My brother in law just about toasted his H2 by shutting off his refill supply line when his damper solenoid stuck open one day.

I added this last post just so I would become a full member :D

Been a junior forever..............

Hondaracer do you know why you are using so much water?  Steaming off  a gallon a day seems like a lot.  Not that I am an expert on steaming off water :)

I shut my water supply line off to my H4 for about 3 weeks and didn't seem to lose any water, at least the fill light didn't come on and I stuck my hand in the water to make sure it was still there...

That is the reason I never open my ash door unless I am cleaning the ashes out.  Sure I get a really nice whooomp of flame once in a while, but it is fun as long as you are expecting it...

I also noticed since I started splitting almost everything my wood hasn't bridged and went out once.

I don't know if that is an issue with anything but Hardys but I used to have my fire die down and all but go out from bridging..

Fire Wood / Re: Burning Silver Maple
« on: January 09, 2014, 01:55:41 PM »
I would be upset if I found I had paid for silver maple. A few years ago a friend gave me a large silver maple to cut up out of his yard. and free was too much!!!

I found it would burn faster than I could split it.  I ended up loading it back on my trailer and dumping the rounds in a big gully.

If I can't get my hand across the block, when its green, I split it; kind of a hold over from the old day with indoor wood stove.  Cause if I couldn't pick it up with one hand green it would not fit in the stove and the wife could not pick up the blocks.

By the way, "my hand size guide" means that anything over about 9" gets be split
Starting this year I starting splitting down to "hand size" at 56 years old my back was feeling the bigger stuff, it takes a few seconds to split a block and a backache for me is all night...

Hardy / Re: t in water heater supply
« on: December 24, 2013, 07:22:22 AM »
I still haven't flushed the copper lines inside the Hardy.  They are so limed up now we lost almost all our hot water. So I am bypassing the Hardy until I can get the lines cleaned out.

I did buy a Brasscraft tankless water heater isolation valve set.  I think it will work good to clean the lines out.
Now to figure out what to flush the lines with, white vinegar?  I used to use diluted muriatic acid in my old H2 until my brother in law ate through the copper lines in his H2 and had to replace them.

For those not familiar with Hardy, they have 2 separate 3/4" water lines that run through a 100' of copper tubing inside the water jacket of the boiler.  In the area where we live lime build up is extreme...  It does not affect pex or pvc but in a years time it will all but close off copper that is subjected to heat such as in a boiler

General Discussion / Re: Muck Boots

I have both Muck and Bog brand boots and I think the Bogs are more comfortable.  However they have got a leak from crawling thru barbwire fence feeding the cows too many times.

The Mucks are warmer though.

Hardy / Re: Hardy plates
« on: November 29, 2013, 06:01:56 AM »
I have had a modified baffle for my H4 that I bought off my dealer. It is a two piece that bolts together after you get it up in over the support rods. It leaves a one inch gap around the outside for exhaust/draft. There is a slide door in the center to open to increase draft and for clean out when needed. I have had mine for 4 years. The savings of wood is 25-33%. Well worth the money. If I recall the cost was $150-175.

Does this go on top of the plate that is already there?    Mine has a plate that sits on top of two bars right below the flue.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / diffusers
« on: November 26, 2013, 10:30:15 AM »
We built a house last year and had the HVAC installed, the hvac tech put the heat exchanger in place for me but other than that I did all the Hardy install.

We moved in May 2012 and no problems, just a little cool in the basement, I thought the basement would be toasty warm in the winter since the furnace is down there. It is cold.
I checked the diffusers and they are hot but no air is coming thru them.  I removed one and it has a square piece of steel blocking the air flow. The surface of the diffuser looks like a pin cushion.  I tried to get me hvac guy to swap with me but he said that is all he has.

I found a  one with a damper  at a supply place that works well, but they are $50.00 each.
btw these are 24" lay ins for a drop ceiling.

The gist of my novel is.. does this resourceful group have a cheaper solution?

I need to be able to close them in the summer.  The basement stay plenty cool enough for my wife without ac.
