General Discussion / Re: Wiring new garage
« on: May 10, 2020, 05:29:52 PM »
I’m currently doing a similar application for a woodworking shop. I did install wiring in the walls and ceiling before insulation and Sheetrock for lights and 120 volt outlets. I ran a 2” PVC conduit from the panel and elbowed out at the ceiling to an 8X8 pull box. From there I will build a conduit system (EMT) as I get a feel for where various machines will go(mostly #10 wire runs). Remember to start from the pull box with a large enough conduit and neck down the sizes the further you go and fewer wires installed. You can also run multiple conduits from the pull box which will use smaller conduit (easier to work with) but might look busier. People who work with conduit regularly make it look easy but it can be frustrating if you use it only on occasion (like myself). Good planning and patience is are two words of advice. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies.  I did check the ASD and it was at 1 so i did go back to 0 with it.  Thanks Richard, I'll grab one and get it on the shelf in case it becomes an issue.  Never had any problems with one and we run them on our sap pumps and I have 2 on my radiant zones.

Plumbing / Johnson A419 controller
« on: February 04, 2019, 04:00:01 AM »
I'm running a 8 degree differential (195-187) but have noticed a lag on the fan kicking on.  Yesterday after cleaning, I turned the switch back on and the fan didn't come on.  I checked and it read 185  fan didn't kick on until 184.  Been running fine but wondering if the probe could go bad or the controller?  Should say it's 5 years old so it doesn't owe me anything.

I agree with Karl.  A coal bed of 2"-3" is ideal.  If it gets too deep and I'm around, I'll stir the bed up and make a pile of coals over the nozzle and let that burn down for an hour or two before firing again.  I also feel that cleaning weekly is imperitive to get the most efficiency out of the unit.  The 20 minutes it takes is time well spent.

Honda is correct.  I have the same unit and am in my 4th season as well.  Rounds are terrible to burn.  I split anything over 4" once.  I also process 2-3 years ahead which on certain types of wood may be too long but I figure if for some reason I'm not able to cut one year at least the wife will not have to worry about it.  You might also try to stack the wood in so it may collapse in toward the nozzle and not fall toward the sides of the firebox.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Emergency Generator
« on: January 04, 2018, 04:45:29 PM »
I know there was a part on the generator that was damaged/replaced.  Not sure if it was a voltage regulator or not.  Judd was correct about the sensitive electrical components.  I've also seen twice with Budarus gas boilers where they are very fickle about running on generated power and it not being "clean" enough.  Both cases have been resolved.

I'm not sure how that happened.  Never did get it fully explained to me.

Be careful with a jumper pack.  Had a client figure he'd start his generator by jumping off of his vehicle and ended up burning up his control panel on oil boiler, Taco relay along with various other items that showed up over his weekend stay.  It was an expensive weekend when he got done.  Trickle charger would be a much safer way to go.

Wouldn't be some sort of vacuum breaker?

.  If it couldn't be Jimmie, but honestly he deserves it.  Great season

Typically around here you would install install an engineered wood floor system inside your ICF's similar to a balloon framed wooden wall structure.  I'm sure in a commercial application it would be done how you described.

Just realized that I never commented on your interest in an ICF home.  I've done 6 ICF basements (3 for myself) and have nothing but good things to say.  I've wanted to do a entire house out of them but ambition level is dropping as I get older but I would encourage anyone to do so.  The things are well insulated and virtually bulletproof.  Construction techniques vary a bit and that's why I think people are hesitant but if you're will to research the process I think you'll find it fairly easy.  Start out level and straight, then its just like putting Lego's together.  Good luck.

I would think as long as your on good soils and below frost line with your footing you would be fine.  An engineer will have some recommendations for pouring the slab from the full basement to the frost wall/slab area such as rebar/expansion joint, ect.  Your ideas are completely doable but the contractors you've spoken with are probably just not familiar with that type of construction.

14
My shop/garage is done with ICF's with a slab poured over for the upper level.  I used corrugated bridge panning and poured a 5" slab on top.  I've also done a car museum for a client with regular poured walls, bar joist and bridge pans.  That was 42' X 60' freespan (no posts in basement, completely open).  All kinds of possibilities but if nothing else, get an engineer involved.  Spending a few dollars up fronts will save you many thousands down the road if something goes wrong.

I spoke with him the other day.  He's on "vacation".  Not sure for how long.  His input is surely missed.
