Smoke comming from damper rod opening.
« on: November 20, 2016, 08:29:12 AM »

Hey all, just happened upon this forum while trouble shooting my Wood master 4400 HD.  I was having trouble with overheating.  I have had my stove for around 8-9 years.  I am changing the gasket on the door annually and just had a cracked flapper on the fan.  I changed out the original fan last fall after hearing a bearing going bad.  The flapper was replaced along with the fan.  Only got one season out of it.  I put the original flapper back on to get me by until I can get a replacement.  I have been noticing an increasing amount of smoke escaping from the hole where the damper rod slides in and out of the unit.  I don't ever recall this being a problem in the past.  Does anyone know if this is normal or how and what I need to fix it.

Without knowing the product line very well, I would guess that over the years the bushing or hole that the rod slides through is getting worn from use and creosote / ash eating away at the steel.

I ran a Woodmaster for a number of years and smoke coming from pull rod opening is the norm. Could get worse if there is a restriction in the exhaust area. Ash in the top tray or creosote in chimney. Never worried too much about it. Your draft damper is a problem, I'd keep a spare on hand.

Overheating sounds like flapper issue in your case. The boy is right about smoke coming out the dampner rod, mines been doing it since day 1
I had to put a weight on my flapper.
Glued a lock on to the top of flapper
Common issue's from what I've read.
