That's about how I feel. Several years ago I would monitor craigslist year round and quickly go after anything free if it wasn't off the edge of a cliff. Often times folks would save my number and eventually the wood called me. Most everything gets turned down now unless it's premium hardwood on my daily path to work.
So in the end, depends on accessibility, convenience, and how much work is involved, and the person.
My understanding is that if a hardwood is free and it is acquired, processed, dried, and sold, you'll clear around $5/hr of your hard labor. I figured it up once and that wasn't far off. If it weren't for the enjoyment of sniffing fresh cut wood and a little exercise I wouldn't do it at all.
