General Discussion / Bugs Bad Now
« on: May 25, 2017, 07:54:36 AM »
Bugs, specially blackflies, are bad right now.
I'm in the bush cutting a bit and notice with the chainsaw blaring the bugs don't bother me as much.
I attribute it to the vibration and noise.
Buddy says it's the exhaust from the saw.
You guys notice this???
Is it ultrasonic noise, or exhaust from saw???

Equipment / Nother broken chain!!! :bash:
« on: February 21, 2016, 11:46:19 AM »
Broke two chains theses last couple of days.
Todays hit me in the shin.
026 with 18 inch bar... sthil chain.
Been using the saw for a few years, bought it used.
I have never broken a chain before, so I don't think it's that common.
I know the bar is a little long for the saw, but bar seems to be in ok condition.
Stuck the depth guide in and it's within specs [just. ]
Any ideas????

Equipment / Chain Freeze
« on: February 17, 2016, 05:09:05 PM »
Don't know how many of you are in the bush cutting now.??
I'm in the woods twice a week for a few hours.   [-20's]20 inches of snow]
I noticed my saw jammed, while bucking up some logs.
I took it home, cleaned it,, and went back out.
Jammed again.....
Well its not jammed,,, it picks up snow and chips and then freezes.[frozen sludge]
Figured it out,,, and what I do is,hold the saw body and dogs away from the log 4-5 inches.[long bar helps]
This allows the snow and chips to go into the air, instead of the saw.
Not being able to use the dogs to cut is a pain,, but she don't get jammed.
Never cut in the winter before,, so did not know.
Learn something new every day..........

Fire Wood / Whats properly seasoned wood?
« on: February 09, 2016, 09:26:25 AM »
Guy selling wood nearby.
No info in the add, but upon prodding him for info, I find the logs were a year old and it was split last week.
I believe its mixed hardwood, mostly Maple.
Is this properly seasoned, or does it not have to sit for 6 months to a year, before burning.

When some one starts a thread, or answers a thread, it's always in the back of my head ....
I wonder where this guy lives.

Plumbing / ADD EXTRA PUMP??
« on: March 16, 2015, 07:28:16 AM »
Pump failure looks to be a concern with my setup, and others.
I have a backup automatic generator and backup propane heat.
If the boiler pump fails and I’m not around,, the whole operation is in jeopardy.

I can   get another cartridge for the pump.
Don’t like the idea of changing it outside at the boiler at -40.
We know it will be close to -40 when it fails.
If I’m home when the pump fails, I would have a very short window to change it out, before the lines at the back of the boiler freeze.
If I’m not home …….forget about it.
I’m installing valves inside the basement to drain the lines before I would attempt to replace the pump cartridge.
I’m kind of a belt and suspenders kinda guy  and was thinking about adding another pump, in series, inside the house.
Would this be feasible?
Could I leave it turned off till needed
Would water flow through it easily?
Could I use a smaller, cheaper pump, as backup?/
Is there anyway to hook it up to come on automatically, if the main pump at the back of the boiler fails?

Fire Wood / Wood Consumption vs. Application
« on: January 24, 2015, 08:01:18 AM »
Searched,,Could not find anything on the consumption of wood,,comparing to what people are heating.
There was a post started in the gen discussions .
It got sidetracked by how cheap wood was compared to oil .
Anyway, lots of people come on here to check,, before buying a OWB.
A guy that just wants to heat his house gets mixed up by someone burning 20 cords heating a farm or stadium.

So..reply with what your heating and how much wood u use.
Include type of wood and other details that affect your wood consumption.not how much money u save! O0
My deal is 1600 ft bungalo with basement, Dhw, 70 ft loop of 1" pex, North Central Ontario.
6 months = 5 or 6 bush cords,maple and ash

May be we can get an average so people can get an idea if they are running efficiently

Cord is 4x8x4 feet or 128 cubic feet

General Discussion / Seafoam
« on: January 18, 2015, 07:16:56 AM »
Never was crazy about fuel additives but what's up with the Seafoam.
I have a worn out Sthil 026, that hasn't idled in years .
Set it down, it shuts off.
I started using this Seafoam stuff in my small engine gasoline,, and bingo the saw idles.
Anyone one else use/like this stuff.
Sorry if the topic was old news.
