Plumbing / Heat loss from under ground pipes
« on: February 28, 2012, 09:49:54 AM »
What's an exceptable number?  I know its all relative, but I believe I read somewhere that you typically lose x amount of degrees per 10 feet for 1.5 inch pex.  Not the triple wrap or the best that money can buy....just the standard insulated pex.

Central pa is under a high wind advisory for the next 14 hours...good for drying that red oak.  I have five chord split and stacked on pallets...scoring some more tomorrow after the winds die down.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Temperature settings

What temp differential do you use?  Mine has always been 20 degrees and I have never changed it...just lowered or raised my on and off depending on the weather.  Just curious...always looking to burn less wood.

General Discussion / insulating a crawl space
« on: January 24, 2012, 07:09:17 AM »
Opinions wanted....
I have an addition on the back of my house (family room/laundry/bath) which is 30'x40.  It sits on poured concrete walls with a crawl space with approximatley 4 feet of head room over 2b stone lined with 6mil poly.  Originally I had carpet in the family room which i pulled up last year and replaced with pergo.  Now when the temps drop into the teens I can tell that the floor gets cold, so I am loosing heat.  What's the best way to insulate this.  My acess is through my basement....I have a wooden door and stairs leading from the basemnt to the crawl space.  I was debating....should I insulate the floor or the concret walls.  I have a heating loop that is deticated to the addition (hot water baseboard)....another option would be to add more pex and sig zag back and forth between the wooden floor joists (radiant heat)?  What would you guys do?  Not looking forward to this...the working coditions will not be pleasant, but I put this off long enough.   :'(

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Hard or Soft Coal
« on: October 21, 2011, 08:46:51 AM »
I'm sure this has been discussed here before, but I am new here...so I am going to ask anyway.  I would like to try coal this season to supplement my wood supply.  I live in central PA and have access to both bitumunous and anthrasite.  I have been doing some research.....but still can not make up my mind.  I have never burned coal before....so I was wondering what you guys (that have been burning for awhile) perfer?

Plumbing / water lose
« on: October 20, 2011, 08:05:16 AM »
Helo all.....new to the forum.
Looking for some advice.  I have a heatmor which I have had for about six years now which I use during the heating season.  I fired it up early (about a month ago)...we had some early cold weather, which turned mild lately (last couple of weeks)  I always have issues with bleeding the air out of my lines...so I figured since I had it up and running that I would keep it lit.  I have been adding water twice a day to maintain my water level in the boiler....is this normal or do I have a problem.  Recently I turned my temperature down to 150 for my high......I have always had issues with maintaining my water level during milder-winter weather but not to this extreme.  I checked all my piping....and no leak could be found...I have about 100 ft between my boiler location and my house.  My worst fear is that I have an underground leak.....anyone else have issues during mild weather?  I forgot to mention, the pump that circulates water from my house to my stove is on a termastat and only circulates when calling for heat....
