Title: Sagging Shaver Door
Post by: Wood Nutt on November 29, 2013, 06:38:29 AM
My shaver door hinges were only two 5/16 bolts.  I think my main reason for the door gasket coming apart was the north/south movement of the door when opening it at least a couple of times a day.  I found a solution, I took a single piece of solid steel rod longer than the distance between the hinges, drilled out the holes 1/32 larger than the rod in the stove hinges and slid the rod thru both hinges.  Really made the door function much better.  I can post a picture if anyone needs to see the fix.

I am new to the forum and am starting my 2nd season heating with this Shaver but have been reading on it for over a year now.  I see all of the negative posts about Shaver but so far so good for me.

I learned a bunch of tips last year from this site with my install.  thanks!

My Shaver door is not sagging  however, the latch is getting very hard to open and shut.  I'm afraid that the door latch will break at any time.  Creosote is not a problem.  It seems that the metal latch is binding somewhere. Any suggestions?

I took some emery cloth (could probably use steel wool too and cleaned up the parts I could reach on my latch.  The oil will work, but instead, I used silicon spray like an overhead door track is lubricated with.  I flooded the latch assembly good with it and cycled the latch open and shut several times and it helped a bunch.  If it starts getting sticky again, I just spray it down and cycle it and seems to keep it loosened up.  I didn't want to use oil because it attracks dirt/dust and other crud.  the spray silicon leaves a dry lub film behind and less crud tends to collect there around the latch.
