Getting ready to give our upstairs bathroom a facelift. Its a small room, like 50sq/ft including thr vanity, tub and small closet. Part of the project is to put down a tile floor. The bathroom is currently heated with a 30 in baseboard, hot water heat, that doesn't put off much heat. I'm thinking about heating the floor since it's such a small space, I'm redoing the floor anyway, and the room could use more heat.

The bathroom is the last room on the upstairs loop that includes 3 bedrooms. I want to be able to install something that will run in line with the loop I have and not have to worry about running a new loop or tempering valve or anything like that. I'm not sure if I should leave the 30in baseboard unit as well as the heated floor, or just the floor?

I have access to almost all of the floor from the bathroom below it, and have no problem cutting up the floor in the other spot and putting it back down after so I can heat the whole area.

The area I would be heating would be 6ft of joist (16in on center), 8ft of joist (16in) and then 8ft of half a joist (8in) so it would be a fairly short run.

Thoughts? What products should I be looking for?

Sounds like you need to get acquainted with Ultra Fin.

The only problem I see with just running one loop you may have to play around with how many pieces you place under the floor to avoid under or over heating the room.

Another possibility would be to add a 3 way zoning valve under the floor and have a thermostat in the bathroom to control the zone valve.

Was looking at Ultra-Fin Plates earlier, glad to see I was on the right track. Anyone know where I can find a smaller quantities then a box of 100?

Adding or removing plates wouldnt be a big issue if I need more or less heat as long as they come on and off fairly easily since I have access from below.

We keep the upstairs around 70 and the door to the bathroom is always open, so too much heat would only be an issue if the floor was too hot to walk on.

I like Ultra fin I did a 20x 20 room on its own loop.  Works great but you need to insulate underneath.  Call Ultra fin I think they only sell it in 100 a box but maybe they can help you out.

How many do you need? I have some left over from a project but they are for 3/4 pipe.

In doing some thinking, I might need the extras for a future kitchen remodel, so I will probably get the box of 100 and just hand on to them.

What PEX works best? I see the list of recommended brands, but can't find most of them easily available  (on amazon.com) or they are crazy expensive for a big roll. Will any PEX that is labeled for radiant heat work?

Not so sure about pex al pex anymore as it’s all chinese. Stick with a name brand with an oxygen barrier if it’s closed loop. I’ve even heard some of the “good” pex al pex that is getting some age is starting to fail.

Looks like I have it all sorted out. I must have had a filter on or something earlier, couldn't find any of the listed PEX for less then $200 a roll! Fixed that and found a couple options, will be buying enough for the bathroom and kitchen so I'm ready when that project comes along.

Where do you live and how much do you need? I have multiple sections of varying lengths of 1/2" oxygen barrier left over from my shed.

ralphxj, do you know how many feet and what size your looking at?

I don't know what shipping would cost but I have multiple different lengths of 1/2" O2 barrier pipe I don't have a use for and you could have it. All you would have to pay is the shipping costs if it is long enough for your needs.

I would have to double check, but I believe I need between 30-40ft maybe? My runs are 6ft, 6ft, 8ft, 8ft and then how ever much I need for the 4 turns between each 16in section of floor joists.

I have a 41' piece and several shorter that you are welcome to have. You can always join them together with crimp couplings or sharkbite push fittings if need be.

Where are you located? Would have to check on shipping prices. My tubing is Nibco brand, 1/2" oxygen barrier. I haven't had any problems with my installation.

I checked on supplyhouse.com and a 300 ft. roll of 1/2" oxygen barrier goes for $99.95 and ships for free. I am in south central Wisconsin.
