woodmaster 4400 door rot
« on: February 08, 2017, 08:30:11 AM »

My 4400 is about 10 years old. Has anyone else had the inside baffle on the bottom of the door rot out? I reach up in the cavity of the door and clean that cavity each week when I clean my stove and have noticed the plate (baffle) all along the bottom of the door has rotted out.Been thinking of putting a large bead of high temp calk along the bottom to seal it back up. Any other ideas?
Thanks

Can’t say I have much experience with Woodmaster’s, however a good welding shop should be able to fix it in the off season.

It's the combination of moisture and heat on mild steel. Slowly rots away. The door jamb can do the same thing. It condenses because it's a cool spot.
Not much you can do except rebuild it when it rusts to the point that you have to fix it. If you rebuild with stainless I'd use 409 as it has a lower expansion rate. Then you'll never fix it again.

My woodmaster 4400 is a 2008 model, after reading this thread inspected mine over the weekend, same issue.  I used a high temp caulk to seal it, stuff is made for wood stoves and for joining or sealing metal, setup pretty hard, if that does not hold will rebuild in off season.

I suspect that this may have caused my fan to fail.

So far, stove is behaving as should.

I actually rebuilt a door for a 434 earlier this year, only thing holding the baffle in place was the latch rod, other than that rotted clear loose all the way around.

My 5500 is on its 13th year. I had to replace the original door after 6 years and need a replacement again. I had to weld in new door jamb after the 8th year.  My next boiler will be a 409 unit!!
