General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: creosote
« on: May 01, 2019, 06:08:14 PM »
For those of you with gassers, use caution because the cans can plug your nozzle pretty easily but it does work, old license plates work as well but I think most of us have more beer cans than license plates to burn.

Slimjim.....What is a nozzle  in your gasser ?  Do you mean a propane back up nozzle ?  I have a gasser (Eclassic 2300) with no built in propane back up and I not aware of my unit having a nozzle ?????

I know this sounds unbelievable, but it works.......Every 2 weeks or so, throw in 3 aluminum cans.   As the cans melt and become gas, it reacts with the creosote, which becomes more flaky and easy to scrape off.

Depends on when you plan on burning them and the species.  If its oak, non-split rounds will take at least a year to dry.  Splitting firewood definitely reduces drying time.....

Central Boiler / Re: Shutdown for the summer season

NICE !!!!  I just looked at the video for your new 550....Looks impressive.  I have an EClassic 2300 that also has been problem free since I purchased it in 2008.  Just shut it down today.  If you believe everything you read and hear about these OWBs, they are only built to last 5 years or so.....With proper maintenance and just knowing how to burn wood in general, it is my opinion that these things can last decades.......Looking forward to your future posts about the install and operation of the 550......If I ever have to shop for a new OWB, I would love to see it.....Don in Candia NH

Central Boiler / Re: Maxim Thermal Valve leaking
« on: April 02, 2018, 12:43:41 PM »
Is the "thermal valve" the same as a thermostatic valve ?  I have a thermostatic valve that also leaks around the seams when my water temp falls below 160.  Huge pain in the butt.  I am thinking about getting rid of it for next season....

I was not aware that a plate heat exchanger needed flushing or any other type of maintenance.  Am I missing something here ?

Central Boiler / Re: Stupid move
« on: November 06, 2017, 02:10:20 PM »
This may be a stupid reaction to your stupid move, but why don't you just remove the ash that falls down into the reaction chamber from the firebox ?  That's all that I do and I never had to remove any ash from the firebox itself

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Thermostat by-pass valve ???
« on: November 04, 2017, 10:02:48 AM »
When I first installed by outdoor wood furnace (CB-2300) 7 years ago,  CB recommended that I install a thermostat by-pass valve, which only allows wood furnace heated water above 150 degrees to reach the heat exchanger.   I still don't understand why this is needed and I am thinking of getting rid of it after this heating season as it has malfunctioned several times.  Can someone out there tell me why I need this and what would happen if I removed it ?......

My rule of thumb for wood furnace:  Start it up at the start of moose season.....Shut her down at the start of Turkey season

I am curious to see what a "lumber crib" is as opposed to testing it with regular fire/cord wood.

Holy doo doo !!!!   1/3 cord per day !!!!....I have a CB E-2300. My house is 2800 square ft and fairly well insulated.   I live in NH and last year was very cold and I burnt 12 cord.  The years prior, I burnt 8 to 10 cord.  (just making sure, a cord is 128 cubic ft).   I burn a mix of soft and hard wood (50/50).

Central Boiler / E-Classic 2300 (2009) - Firebox door issue
« on: March 16, 2014, 04:16:00 PM »
Hello,

I have an E-Classic 2300 manufactured in 2009 and I have encountered a little problem.  I recently replaced my door gasket for the first time and noticed what appeared to be some crumbling of the door insulating material that is bolted under the metal panel that faces the fire.  This appears to be causing some smoke/air to escape the firebox and leak through the door when the fan is on.  I believe that CB provides a replacement kit for the fire box door parts.  Does anyone out there have a similar experience ?  Cost ?

I had a similar experience this past weekend when I was away.  My OWB has a blower/fan, so I let the fire die down and turned power off to the OWB prior to leaving, but connected the water circulator to a separate outlet.  My theory is why let the blower/fan blow cold air all weekend cooling down the water.   I came home Sunday and water temp was at 119 degrees.  We had single digit nights and 20s during the day....

Because our wood lot provides firewood for 3 households and I am the only one with an outdoor wood furnace (E-2300), I get all of the crap wood (ie pine, hemlock, softwood etc).  Although it is dry, I find that burning this wood does result in more creosote build-up as compared to buring good hard wood.  My chimney does accumulate more creosote after burning this soft wood.
