Huskee 35 ton engine
«

I'm looking to replace the hard starting, recoil eating 12hp B&S on my 12 yr old Huskee/Speedco/TSC 35 ton splitter. I know there is a "cold/hard start bulletin" on the engine but figured after parts and labor It would be just as cost effective to replace the entire thing. Any suggestions?

Roscoe,
There are many opinions on this one.. I will offer mine. As a small engine mechanic for 10 yrs by trade and part time for 7, the Honda GX series is hard to beat. The 390 would be the closest replacement.

Seems like they have two series of those Honda engines though, the one on my power washer you need to keep it somewhere warm or you'll pull your arm right out of the socket on colder days (below 50) while the one on our seed tender starts the first pull every time.

I know that some will disagree with me here but it is worth looking at the honda clone engines from harbor frieght. Just make sure you open the box before you leave the store to make sure everything is in order.

Mlappin,
You are correct. I would lay money down that the hard starting honda is a GC series. Honda created an affordable engine several years ago to compete with the " knock off" market. These are easily identified by their plastic recoil housing and fuel tank. The reliable model you speak of is a "Gx" series. Hugh differences from ball bearing supported crankshaft to plastic camshafts.

You're correct stewie, the seed tender uses a GX and the power washer is a GC, went and looked this AM to confirm. Starters for the GX are stupid expensive I've found, it starts so well I haven't even bothered changing the starter.

So the GX is the one to get?
Right now my B&S is a vertical shaft. I'm no mechanic and I'm wondering how difficult it would be to swap vertical for horizontal?
Also, is there anyone on here that deals in these type engines.....would like to support sponsors/members??? If not, who is a good dealer?

Is the engine direct coupled to the hydraulic pump or is there a chain or belt that run the pump? If the pump can handle the same RPM as the pump and is direct coupled then switching from vertical to horizontal should be easy as long as you have the space and enough hose length. Where are you located?
