Damper not shutting?
« on: December 26, 2016, 07:39:02 AM »

I suspect my damper is not shutting completely? I've manually messed with it from the back some but there seems to still be a problem. (Smoldering and smoking more than usual. Temps higher than normal when idle. boiled over last night )
Anyone else experience this? It looks simple enough to check by taking the fan motor off but not sure of what I will find or any common fixes?
Thanks for any suggestions.

You can get ash or a cinder under the flap. Take the fan off and if you have a shop vac clean it out. Flip it up and down while your cleaning.

I agree. That's the short term fix. You will want to clean the air cute mid season if it keeps happening and clean out where the cute turns and goes into the stove. I explain this very well in my clean out video.

Faulty door seals can also cause similar symptoms, but I also agree to check the damper first.

Some small nails had worked their way up underneath the damper. Preventing the damper from closing. Holding it open about 3 inches.
Thanks guys. Have a feeling I'm going to be using the shop vac on the ash chute in the future.
