So what happened to shut this place down last week?
Someone forgot to fill the stove and the fire went out.

Central Boiler / Edge 750 users

My brother is getting a new stove and is considering an Edge 750 to replace his 22 year old CB 6048.  He is concerned about using non seasoned wood in the Edge though.  He doesn't always have time to cut, split and season his firewood and sometimes has to burn wood that isn't quite dry enough.  It doesn't burn as well, but it sometimes happens for him.

He was told by the dealer that you pretty much NEED to burn only seasoned wood in the Edge.  Is there anyone here with an Edge that does occasionally burn not fully seasoned wood, with good results?

I check in and look at the new posts daily, but unless I see something interesting to me, I usually don't post anything.  for me, my system is all figured out and my questions are answered.  This place was a great help to me and I want to say thanks to all who contribute.  I'm sure lots of new owners still get lots of help from here.

Id guess you have an air bubble in the lines somewhere.  Every system is different on how to bleed it so it'd be hard for us to help out.  Try to use some common sense and hopefully you can find it.  I installed a valve with an open pipe leading to my floor drain just for bleeding air.  Maybe the previous owner did something like that and you're not seeing it yet...?

As to the boiling over, my CB unit doesn't use a fan, it uses a damper to cut off the incoming air once it gets up to temp.  And once it reaches the temp and the damper shuts off, the heat barely rises as the flames pretty much stop immediately.  I'm not sure about those that use a fan and I could be wrong here, but It sounds like it's still sucking in air once it reaches temp and letting the fire get hotter.

A question for the group... Do stoves that control a fan also shut off a damper, or do they just rely on the stopped fan to control the air to the fire?

I've been using well water for the past 11 or 12 seasons with no problems.
My next door neighbor is my brother and has had his OWB for 10 years longer than I have.

I know you're in Ontario and I'm on Wisconsin, but I started mine up a couple days ago.  I created a post to keep track of each years start and end dates if want to see what my start dates are.  Feel free to post yours on it if you want:

I heat about 5000 sf with my CB6048 and have no problems for the past 11 seasons.  My brother has had his CB6048 for over 20 years.  We both love our Central boilers but CB is the only brand we've had experience with.  I've heard good things about both brands and think either one will be a good choice.

But the reality is that most people who buy and use an OWB don't replace it for another brand simply because they last so long.  It might be hard to find someone who has had both for a number of years.  And even if you do... One persons results may not be a good indicator of quality for either brand.

So basically I'm not much help other than giving my personal experience with Central boiler.

I would suggest either leaving some space, or leaving an easy way to gain access to both exchangers to clean the dust off each one with a shop vac.

I'm on my 11th season now I think, so I guess maybe I should feel lucky. About our fifth season in, my wife smashed her finger against the stove while loading, and broke her finger.   I smashed my thumb last night while loading the beast. I was wearing gloves, it didn't break any bone, but there was so much pain I didn't sleep until 7 o'clock this morning.  The pain is better now and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to sleep tonight.  You can see the hole in the center of the nail that I drilled late last night to help relieve the pressure.

Anyone else smash their fingers while loading, bad enough to cause problems the next day?
Commiserate with me.

I don't use FB for groups like that.  I like forums better.  Not sure why it's so slow around here though. Seems like forums get slow after a while.
