Fire Wood / Tote Cage ideas
« on: October 22, 2017, 09:01:35 AM »
Thought I would start a new topic with my ideas of outdoor wood storage for those of us who have no wood shed or barn to store it in the dry. I had 24 of the chemical tote tanks and cages given to me by a larger farmer in the area. I had known this guy for a lot of years and he just wanted to tidy up around his tool shed and offered to let me have them if I would take them all. After a lot of thought I come up with some easy ways to use these to better store my firewood to prevent rot. Also it's much easier to take wood to the boiler when needed. I fill these right in the woods when I'm cutting. They are stackable and allow ventilation for the wood. If you have another helpful tip on these I would appreciate the help. I wrap these in plastic once they are filled only leaving the bottom 2 feet all around exposed.

Electronics / Duct blower speed different using heat pump vs. boiler
« on: December 22, 2016, 03:33:31 PM »
What can I do to get my blower speed to blow as hard as it does when the central air is on. I'm only using the green wire on my thermostat. My ducts are in the ceiling and my ceiling is 11 ft causing a lot of heat to stay up high away from floor. If the duct was putting out more air it would blow it down to floor. When the central heat pump is running you can hear the air coming out and feel it. Using boiler thermostat it's much slower.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Deep creep sea foam
« on: December 08, 2016, 10:46:35 AM »
You all may have read where I was having sticking creosote problems with my draft door. I had heard about a sea foam called" deep creep ". Man that stuff could remove brass from brass knuckles😀
It's a little pricy but well worth it. Definitely an enemy to creosote buildup. Maybe this will help solve someone else's problem with a sticking flap. Sure helped mine

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Hot coals falling out
« on: December 08, 2016, 06:11:12 AM »
im having problems with hot coals falling out of firebox when I open the door or when I'm leveling down the coal bed. When the wind is blowing there's a danger here of leaves and my stack of firewood of catching on fire. I keep buckets of water nearby and wet the area down after I'm done filling. Any of you guys have a simple remedy for this. I attached a picture of my firebox when it was new.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Indicator light
« on: December 04, 2016, 06:04:52 PM »
I'd like to have a light come on when my boiler is calling for the draft blower to be on. A light I could see out the window to let me know how long it's taking to heat up . That would tell me how much wood is left in the firebox. My boiler is the old fashioned type with not electronics in it. Also thinking of putting a digital temperature controller on front of it rather than the aquastat. Any suggestions on either of these.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Just too warm still
« on: October 28, 2016, 11:53:36 AM »
I'm struggling with sap and soot build up. This morning I went out and found my draft flapper stuck shut with creosote sap and fire gone out. My boiler is for 8000 sq ft and I'm heating 5400 so it's overkill. The problem is this time of year when it's warm during day it's not calling for heat very often . Is there a secret to fixing this other than to Try and burn dryer wood. My wood is mostly 8 months to 1 1/2 years old. Any of you guys experience this and found a way to keep the flapper free.

Anyone ever tried using these on the Boiler to control water temp in place of aquastat?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / What am I doing wrong??
« on: October 18, 2016, 03:55:45 PM »
I have the timberline sharpener and am having trouble getting mains chains as sharp as they were when I first got it. One side seems to be tighter when I try and do both teeth as I go. Any tips would sure help. I bought a new chain and it cut very very good. I hit a nail on a pallet and re sharpened and can't get that razor sharp feel. It seems it's jumping a little when I cut. Cuts straight but too much saw dust not enough shavings.

I had a few problems and thought I would list all good and bad. Any help with the bad would be appreciated.
5400 sq ft. @ 72 degrees for 100.00-115.00 per month electricity
No interruptions in the boiler whatsoever. Did have a little problem with flapper draft door sticking closed. Hopefully someone can help me with that.

My new Husqvarna 460 rancher turned out to be the best Christmas present I ever received. I am bugged about it leaking bar oil in its case when not being used. Any solutions on that would be good.

Never had to crank up my generator all winter. Glad of that.

Broke little finger while positioning red oak logs on my splitter. But not any stitches.
All in all its been a good season.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Very noisy
« on: February 12, 2016, 04:16:02 AM »
I have a forced air Owb and when the draft fan kicks on and the fire starts to blaze up the draft flap starts making a clapping noise . It's pretty loud and I know my neighbors can hear it well. Is there anything I can do to prevent this. It's seems it's pulling air so hard it closes the flap and then opens right back up only in fast motion. I called the company and he the tech said to close the air flow door a little however it does not prevent it from doing it. Once the fire gets very hot and the smoke stops it quits the clapping. Maybe this is normal, hoping you guys can help me.

Equipment / Falling Spikes
« on: February 09, 2016, 06:54:05 AM »
I noticed that people are putting larger falling spikes on their 460 Ranchers. What's the advantage to larger beefier falling spikes? Why are the factory spikes not enough. Just curious. I really like the way they look. Been cutting wood for 45 years or so and have never put bigger falling spikes on a saw. I may want to if its practical.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Jonas vs. Buford
« on: January 24, 2016, 04:52:28 PM »
Me and my wife named our Boiler Buford the Dragon. Old Buford been doing a good job battling winter storm Jonas. We had 1/4 inch ice and 12 inches of snow and got down to 8 above last night. Now here in Ky. That's a bad storm. Buford Not had a bit of trouble keeping up on heat. My wood pile was covered with plastic and  a little hard to pull plastic back to get wood out but all is well. Way to go Buford.

Equipment / Husqvarna warranty
« on: January 12, 2016, 06:37:18 AM »
My kids and grandkids all pitched in and bought me the 460 rancher for Christmas. I'm wandering how I go about getting my warranty. It just arrived at my house by FedEx one day. I understand that Husqvarna has very good warranty. Any of you guys know how I get this set up? Also any of you who own this particular model tell me dos and dont's and features about the saw. I cranked it and it runs very good. Came with the 20 inch bar. I've been cutting all my wood with a Stihl ms270 up until I got this one. Sold my Stihl when I got it. Wandering how the two compare. I've got couple years worth of wood stacked and covered so I'm not cutting right now.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Another garage heat question
« on: January 10, 2016, 03:20:16 PM »
My boiler is about 10 feet from the left door of my two car garage which is also used in winter to make repairs and
for men type loafing.( man cave) . I'm only using two ports on my boiler, one for heating my 5400 sq ft. house and the other heating my domestic water.  My boiler is large enough to heat up to 8000 sq ft. My question is can you install quick coupler on the back of the boiler on one of the ports and run an insulated pipe on top of ground and straight in to my garage  and hooked to a pump on the wall also with a quick coupler.  Run another pipe from the pump to a steam coil  box heater mounted in the ceiling of the garage. That way I could only run pump while using shop in winter and not have to dig up the ground around my garage. Roll up the pipe and store away when not being used ,blow water out of pump and reverse process when I need heat. Sounds complicated I know but would be easy and cheap way to run. I'm open to suggestions on a better way without digging ditch and running heat exchanger.

Equipment / 460 rancher bar length ?
« on: January 10, 2016, 11:05:13 AM »
I have a brand new Husqvarna 460 rancher that came with 20 inch bar. Wandering if anyone out there uses both or all three bar lengths that are recommended by Husqvarna.16, 20, or 24" bars. How does saw perform with each size. I can see times when all three would be good.
