17HP Kawasaki Twin No Spark
« on: June 02, 2019, 03:41:14 AM »

I have a year 2000 Kawasaki twin motor with no spark at both plugs, she turns over very well and has plenty of gas.  I have unplugged the shorting wire from the coils thinking there's a problem with the shorting circuit that shuts her down when the ignition key is turned to the off position. I have checked the engine oil; it has a safety shutdown switch if the oil gets too low, oil is full.  I have checked all of the safety switches I can find and by-passed them, that made no difference.  Any ides?  Roger

I have seen a few of the 18 HP Kawi twins in the JD mowers that pooped out the plastic camshaft, losing spark. Not sure if the 17 has the same POS cam but it may be something to look into? Almost sounds like it could very well be as simple as a coil too, unless it has the external ignitor

I had a twin cylinder briggs in a rider once that every once in awhile it refused to start, no spark whatsoever. Stick a screwdriver in one of the spark plug boots and ground it out then it popped right off, use a insulated pair of pliers to reattach the plug wire, next time it would start fine and could be days, weeks, or months before it did it again.

I finally got her going again.  I swapped out the ignition coils for new ones and she fired right up.  Theory is a surge or short caused them fail.  Whatever it was the new ones took care of the problem.  Roger
