Title: 400dcss throwing sparks
Post by: heat550 on January 18, 2016, 01:10:14 AM
Has anyone else noticed this ? 400dcss is a spark launcher from chimney between cycles . I have sparks shooting out about 10 feet . every once in while .this is after all moisture out of wood . I'm burning about 25% moisture oak right now .  this all started after putting in all dry oak . wonder if its crackle wood :)  I looked there little pieces of black carbon looking pieces . Im guessing I'm just burning  build up off in flu and chimney as its -17f right now . Might need some kind of cap or something slow down the launching .
old 200css had one of the stainless steel caps . If i wasn't in middle of bunch of oak trees I wouldn't care but leaves do burn :)

When I'm burning oak under %20 I get sparks after the first fresh load....it crackles alot, u can here it outside the stove! Had some white oak at 18% earlier this year and it was shooting out sparks after first load. I have a SS chimney cap but only use it in the fall and early spring when it is wet/rainy. I have found to get a much better draft without it on...I check chimney this weekend to see build up. Haven't check it since October 1st....there was nothing :) completely empty

I will have to get a cap atleast to slow it down. Do you have picture or style of your cap.
I could put on when needed. Because them sparkes really rocket out of there white to red hot.
Thanks for your post.

Mines shooting so many sparks Im going to go pick this one up tomorrow.I seen they had one but didn't know if it was the right one. Now I know it is . here seems like draft isn't a issue. It might slow down crazy sparks.

Thanks for the info . when I seen it at Menards I was like is that the right one naaaa I have to makesure I have right style lock . I looked at box my extention came in when i got home and it was dam I need to make another trip to menards :) your post sealed the deal :)  Ya for some reason if i have bed of coals covering whole grate I get these dam sparks coming out . never seen that problem before . wet wood , dry wood it does not matter .  Might be i have just enough heat load stove burns hotter I don't know .
hopefully cap will  atleast stop them from the 20 ft air born white hot spark launch . Have to keep this dragon fallout contained

I have the basic cap with some expanded metal around.  Slows down the fast fliers, but doesn't block all the sparks.  I get some if I rake and reload during or just after the fan was on.  Also makes a big difference in wood types for me.  I had some aspen and possibly mulberry in last fall and boy did it spark a lot.  I was concerned about catching the field stubble on fire.

Normally sparks are not an issue for me.

If I load my 400 away from the door a bit and load the back of the firebox up more instead... I don't get any sparks...even loaded up in front of the door I haven't noticed much. I took my rain cap off as I found it drafts better...but I will put it back o n in the early spring

See my old 200css wasn't as bad with crazy sparks . I had a cap on it also just mainly when I fixed it and stirred coals is only noticeable sparks . It seems the 400dcss is fast fliers mega producer  :o But It could be just my wood also as some of its wet Im mixing it with my dry .
