An inexpensive OWB SAFETY FEATURE:

A general need for safety features is a serious problem with the DIY OWB. 
The good news is that the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is practically non-existant,  but the risk of accidental fires is less remote.  A spark arrestor can help to prevent wild fires.
 
Here is an article for an inexpensive DIY Spark Suppressor that can help prevent sparks from escaping from the stack of your OWB.

Electronics / battery backup

I had the same problem and have developed a battery backup for my OWB.  If enough people are interested , I can build them for distribution at a resonable cost.  My design includes both AC and DC backup for main and zone pumps and is housed in an eletronic enclosure.  Anyone interested can email me at:
