Portage & Main / Re: Portage and main, Central Boiler, or Heatmaster?
« on: November 16, 2012, 06:31:12 AM »
Are you interested in outside units or do you have a spare shop to install and OWB in?

Hicks waterstove is an excellent choice. I know the guy personally (my neighbor), he's been around for well
over 30 years. He offers (3) types of stoves including a gasser model and the parts are easily sourced
from grainger.

I grew up with one of his stoves, my father has bought one of his several times.

I bought my FIL's old house which had one build in 1984. We finally replaced it because we lumped
it into the home loan.

The fella I bought my stove from (my neighbor) has 6-8 cast iron radiators in his home shop.
It works awesome and his shop stays toasty.

I'm a little confused....Was the wood bridged when you went outside or just burnt up?

I've never had a problem with bridging but I have used pine. If your using only pine
it burns a lot quicker than hardwood.

I use pine in my stove and haven't had problems with the fire going out. I have had
problems with the wood burning up and my fan will stay on blowing cold air into
my firebox cooling the water temp.

I installed a timer on my blower. I pack my stove (2) times a day and set the timer for
8hrs. The timer is setup to power the Aquastat. The Aquastat will work normally cutting
the fan on and off until the timer has ran out of time.

Hardy / Re: how many of you get flames out the stack?

Walker,

I would lengthen your chimney first and see how it goes. You may find that the flame either
stops or isn't enough to worry about.

Electronics / Re: Mechanical Timer for Blower
« on: November 06, 2012, 12:38:43 PM »
No, I would like to set the timer for 8-12hrs.

I get home in the afternoon and load my stove. If I leave it the next morning I'll
have nothing but coals in the stove and cold air blowing in because it's not
at 150. If I hook the timer in front of the Aquastat, set it for say 6hr the timer
will kick off at 6hrs and not allow the fan to come back on. The Aquastat will
run normally except for a timer being added to shut off power at a certain time.

I will be using the aquastat but will add a timer to it.

As the stove is right now the aquastat cuts the blower on
when the temps drop below 150. If for some reason
I'm asleep the time will kick off and not allow the blower to
come on if the temp drops below 150.

Electronics / Mechanical Timer for Blower
« on: November 06, 2012, 07:18:06 AM »
I just bought a new Hicks water stove and the blower is controlled by a Honeywell Aquastat.

The type of stove I bought is a little different than the brands represented on this site.
It's an in shed type OWB with a 600 Gallon capacity (after firebox).
I would like to setup a timer so I can load wood, set the timer and
walk away.

My current setup allows for heating a large capacity of water then using it overnight.
After 12hrs the wood is burnt and the fan is blowing on coals cooling the firebox & water.

What type of mechanical timer would you recommend?

Central Boiler / Re: Wood shed

Hey guy's I'm new here but noticed the comments about a shed.

The type of stove I have requires a shed but i really enjoy it. I can get out of the rain and store a winters worth of wood it needed.
