How can I increase Ph level
« on: January 19, 2014, 02:28:21 PM »

I have a homemade outdoor furnace that holds approx. 280 gallons water. The PPM level is around 800 but my PH level is only 6.5. Can I increase the PH level with baking soda and not counter act my PPM level? Thanks Michael

Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate) shouldn't affect nitrite levels.  I would probably recommend concentrated sodium hydroxide (lye) if you can get it.  It is commonly used alongside nitrite as a corrosion inhibitor. It's nasty stuff and a little goes a long way.  Start with a few tablespoons and work up from there to avoid over dosing.  Aim for a pH around 8.5.

Most companies are happy with ph results in the 8.5-11 range

Same place Mr. ITO mentioned.  Pool supply stores make a product called "spa down" or "ph reducer" or things like that.  There are instructions on the bottle as to the dilution requirements.
