General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / What type of spray foam?
« on: May 29, 2015, 07:58:42 PM »
So I've decided to give my NC-175 one last shot before replacing it, albeit with one change. I plan on replacing the batt insulation with spray foam insulation. Any suggestions on what type of foam I should use?
Thanks.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / New Boiler Maybe?
« on: December 04, 2014, 08:52:30 PM »
I'm beginning to wonder if my NCB-175 is under-sized for my house. I cannot get solid burn times out of my unit. NC specs say that the unit should heat up to 4k sq' and my house is 3k sq' and 15 years old (I also heat domestic hot water).  I recently replaced the lines with Logstar and although I'm burning semi-green/seasoned hardwood (4-6 months), I can only get 8 hour burns or so. Some people I talk to get 16, 24+ hour burn times. Was thinking about calling P&M or Central Boiler for some quotes. What do you think?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Stack Flames
« on: November 10, 2014, 08:30:02 PM »
Often at times I have flames shooting out of my stack. I have a NCB175 and I extended the stack with 3' of steel pipe. Is this normal/bad? I assume there is heat loss as a result, how do I trap the heat? Thanks.

Plumbing / Did my pump fail? Help Please.
« on: October 18, 2014, 07:48:05 PM »
I fired up my stove today (first time since logstar pipe replacement) and got it up to temp (180 degrees). The pump started getting very hot and the temp of my lines inside the basement were 65 degrees. I should note that during the logstar pipe install the boiler was without water for approximately a week.

Does this sound like a pump failure or maybe an air lock? Also, my previous pipe was 1" OD and my logstar is 1" ID - could this be the reason also?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Natures Comfort / NC Treatment?
« on: August 24, 2014, 09:04:21 PM »
Is there a "generic"  water treatment to use with my NCB175 or is the Nature's Comfort brand something special? I just drained it today and need to refill tomorrow.

Plumbing / New Pipe Replacement in the works
« on: July 23, 2014, 09:18:56 PM »
I believe a pipe replacement project is in my future. This past winter posed several problems for me using a Nature's Comfort NCB-175 to heat our 3,000 sq foot house and DHW. My wife and I would fill the unit ~5 times per day, without bringing the house completely up to temp. I should note that we purchased the home in November and the OWB was installed by the previous owner.

I have a 14 degree temp delta between what comes out of the OWB and what goes into my plate ex-changer in the basement. The lines appear to be triple wrapped, 1" pex lines in corrugated pipe. I'm thinking of replacing the lines with Logstar.

Any thoughts?

Natures Comfort / Newbie In Need of Some HELP
« on: January 31, 2014, 08:16:41 PM »
My wife and I recently purchased a 3,000 sq' home in October that came with a NCB-175 tied into a oil fired boiler and base board heat. The previous owner said that he hadn't purchased oil in 2 years, burned ~6-10 chord annually, and filled it twice a day. So far, I have not been able to achieve those #s.  I gone through approximately 10 chord of wood and a 1/4 tank of oil and its only the end of January.

With the recent cold spell, we fill the OWB ~5 times a day and now the fire just smolders and doesn't roar.  I'm getting frustrated and am contemplating just burning oil, although kinda defeats the purpose of the OWB.  I been in touch with my local dealer, and he can't figure it out and wants me to buy a solar attachment to tie into my OWB to assist. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
