General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Something to share
« on: February 12, 2009, 06:55:08 PM »
I took advantage of this mild weather to try things with the OWB.I unhooked the blower fan motor to the stove and ran it on natural draft. The results were not what I thought they would be. The recovery time was very slow,it took over an hour to go from 160F to 180F.This wasn't a problem on this warmer day, because the load on the system was low.Another problem was that the smoke out the stack was much more than when the fan is being used.I do have 6ft. of all fuel chimney added to the stove,so it should not of had a draft issue. I think the major reason for the poor operation was, that the amount of air to the fire was not enough. I have never seen a stove that uses natural draft, but I bet the area for air to enter the fire box is larger than the opening of the forced fan.Anyway I wanted to try it to see if on warmer days that I could shut off the fan and save some electric. It did not cost anything to try,but I do not think I will do it again. Just thought I would share what I did.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Took advantage
« on: January 23, 2009, 08:43:59 PM »

I took advantage of the warm day in NE Ohio today.I let the OWB burn down and took out some ashes for the second time this season.Did anyone else have time to do this? Looks like the colder weather is on the way back, and I was glad for such a nice day to do this chore.

Global Hydronics / Hawken Energy/Global Hydronics

We have a Hawken Energy OWB,but it is made by Global Hydronics. We are into the third year of heating our home and our hot water with it. To this point we have no issues with it. It works very well.In thist past week with low temps. of -14F it kept us warm and cozy with all of the hot water we could use and not as much wood used as I would have thought.

Is every one's OWB keeping up with the demands on it with this influx of arctic air we are having?

Hawken Energy, support only / The heating season started here tonight

At about 6:30 I removed the blower from the indoor furnace ,cleaned the blower wheel and oiled the motor.

Put things back together, put wood in the OWB and lit it off for the season.Won't need much heat but will make DOM hot water though. At 7:15 the water temp. was 65deg.F and at 8:30 it was up to 175deg.F Everything looks good to go.

« on: May 16, 2008, 05:11:47 PM »
It is May 16th and it is still cool and damp enough to keep the OWB burning. Just wondered how many others are still burning yours? We are in Stark Co. Ohio.

Is there any one out there that is not glad that they spent the time and the money to install an OWB?

Have any of you built a shed to cover your wood pile? If so could you post photos of it?

We have used our Hawken Energy for two heating seasons. Has worked very well for us so far. We have used 6 to 7 cords of wood each year to heat a 1500 s/f home with a full finished basement and dom. hot water also. Water is heated with a side arm that I built . Our nat. gas bills have been around $10.50 per month during the months that the OWB is in operation. Hoping that the ruling from the Ohio EPA dose not force us to shut it down and lose all the hard earned money that we spent to save on gas.
