Last year I had the firewood processor set for an average of 17”, this allowed a row in the back of the G400 and another in the front, this seemed to work best at keeping the nozzle covered with coals all the time. This year I set it as long as possible, even though it has a 24” stroke on the cylinder the best you can expect to do is 22”, I set it for that as soon as my distributor has more in I’ll be swapping the 400 out for a 200. Lots of work on the shop, rest of the windows in the house have been changed then discovered that under a staircase on a outside wall had zero insulation. Found this out when I opened it up to build a closet under the stair well. So now the G400 is serious overkill.
This is a tip from Scott Sloan of Heartland Energy LLC (http://Heartland Energy LLC), my distributor, instead of placing your pieces long ways in the box place em across the box. I tried that once before and it didn’t work at all, trick is to keep em tight, but not as tight as you can, too tight and forget it. So far has worked very well and by cutting the pieces longer, less cuts and less pieces to pick up. If I had a splitter that had a 30” stroke than I’d go back to the way recommended by Heatmaster, but with 22” pieces this seems to be working pretty well.

Yep, been doing that all this season. Works a lot better than stacking it long ways. I'm not sure if it would be beneficial in a 100 or 200 though.

I am getting the same burn times, but my wood is very dry, I don't think that helps much.

Main reason I’m doing it in the 400 is with 22” pieces seems one end of the slot or the other was exposed after awhile and I’d get some smoke, hasn’t been an issue yet with placing wood in crossways.

I hope the cross ways loading will eventually get in the owners manual. I've heard several people say it helps cut the wood in two and avoid bridging or burning out the coal bed.
On my G1 I've turned long pieces (24"+) on end. Just have to be very careful to lean them so they don't jamb up. Gotta keep a coal bed.

I cut all my wood to 20", I may start cutting to 18" or even 16" and start stacking crossways in the firebox. Makes them easier to handle anyway.
