A buddy of mine had this exchanger installed on his indoor oil boiler and decided to eliminate it and plumb direct from his outdoor boiler. I'm wondering if this unit would be overkill to heat my domestic hot water? He's selling it for a good price. It's made by Sec Heatexchangers and the model # is M31B. What do u think? Thanks

I use a 20 plate, so I would imagine this would be overkill. But if you are getting it at a good price, it is not going to hurt anything. You'll just have really hot water!

I use a 10 plate and my water is 140 at the tap. Definitely overkill. Though I am a fan of overkill.

Iam useing a 40 plate to heat my house and hot water!

I just put in a 30 plate and could not be happier. I bought mine new from a dealer on this site and feel I got a good deal, so if it is cheap enough for you,go for it. I have shut my water heater completely off and have way more than enough HOT water. A 50 plate should heat your whole neighborhoods water.

That's what i was thinking. I just hope it doesn't pull too many btu's from the water. Thanks for the info everyone.

I think this is a case where overkill can't hurt you. It can't really draw too many BTU's unless you are using too much hot water. It'll only draw enough BTU's to maintain the temp in your water heater.
