$12,300!
« on: May 06, 2008, 09:48:03 PM »

I have an oil-fired, pressurized hot water baseboard heating system with a domestic coil.

I was quoted $12,300 for:
  Central Boiler 5036
  25 year warranty
  175’ Trenching & ThermoPex Pipe
  heat exchanger
  spark arrester
  50”x66” patio block slab
  sales tax

How does this sound?

Hey furjaw welcome to the message board.

I purchased a WoodMaster 4400 and all the pipe and other items needed for about $6500.  Even after getting some concrete, furnace work, and laying the pipe I am probably going to have about $7500 in all.

I am not suggesting you get a woodmaster just you should look around.

Hi

I haven't finished my install, but it looks high from what I have done so far.  I am installing to a mobile home.  Down-draft forced air and a propane hot water heater.

I bought a 6048 standard model. (No special colors, stainless, or dual-fuel) for roughly $7200 delivered.

I have made my own slab. Slab was built to Classic's sizing from the site.    $30 for lumber 2x6's, had enough nails hanging around.  24 bags of quikrete at $5 each = $120  Rental of a compactor and cement mixer = $88.  So the slab was $238.

I purchased my own wire and have installed it in the house to two spare breakers.  2 coils of 12/2 150ft at $130ea = $260

I installed a second thermostat already. $20.

So far my total is $7718.

I still need it installed.  Thermopex and the 2 heat exchangers.

I am installing about 120ft from the house.  The ditch is being dug as part of other work being done around my house so not sure how much the ditching alone would cost.

If thermopex costs me $15/ft. (Don't know the cost yet, hoping around $7) it would be $1800, if each heat exchanger was $500 and labor was $1000 it would still only total

$11518.

My last numbers are extremely inflated I believe, I expect to come out under $10000 and that is for a larger boiler than you are looking at.  I would think that you should easily be under $10000.  The 175ft of pipe is your biggest expense besides the boiler.

I hope this helps.  This Friday when I am installed I can get you some more substantial numbers.

I will update with the total when the dealer sends me the install bill.

He said roughly $2000 and shouldn't be more than $2500.

Knowing my total before was $7718, the final figure should be somewhere between $9718 and $10218.

So I think you are definitely high.

And the 25 year warranty should not cost you anything extra, you just need to send in the paperwork with the boiler.

And I believe the spark arrestor is included at no extra cost as well.

i agree the  25 year warranty  should  cost  nothing...it is worth nothing.....limited warranty..covering what.....manufacturing defects...what  the hell is  that? a bubble in the  paint?
your  stove pops a hole...try and convince  the  dealer  that is  a  manufacturing error.... you might  get  a  new  blower if  that  goes (pro rated)

i know  a  guy  who got a hole in his  stove in  3 years...his  warranty after  bitching for  a  week....the  dealer  gave him a  patch  for  free (a piece of  steel) and told him  to  get it  welded on at his own expence

i think  most  warranties are  worded by  lawyers to sound  good  but  mean  nothing
another guy i  know  has had  his  stove  for  10 years...his  blower  rotted off the  stove (it  does sit outside)..he repaired it  his  self  because  warranty on  the  blower  is only  one  year...(although the  blower still worked it  just  fell off the  stove)
both these  problems were on  two different  companies  stoves...both  warranties did nothing (although i tend  to agree..a blower  after  ten years would owe me nothing)

i know  no one  whom has

had a  good experience with warranty..has  anyone ?

Ok, I got my installation bill in the mail yesterday.

For the install, pipes heat exchangers, valves etc..  it was 2701.20

That brings my total to $10419.20.

The only thing that I have not added in that yours would need is the ditching.  My guy dug my ditch in under 20 min.  About 130 ft.  Not sure what the cost would be.  This was included in a quote for a much larger job.

I am hoping that the warranty is a good one.  There are good and bad warranties.  I have had good luck in the past, just stay with a quality product and the company will stand behind it.

I believe the spark arrestor is just the piece of "chicken wire" that is on the chimney cap.  My dealer did not even install it, saying that they cause more trouble.  Apparently they get clogged and cause the furnace to run poorly.  This is just what he said, I figured if he installs them he should know a bit more about it than me.
