Fire Box Tools For Your OWB
« on: March 09, 2014, 09:31:28 AM »

Well I have a question for everyone about the tools they use to move the ashes around, stove pokers or whatever you call them. I currently use a long steel rod to adjust the wood and poke the ashes to help them settle. I also use a shovel to adjust the ashes which I realize will not last long with a wooden handle. I use the shovel to move the ashes around. I was thinking of using a rack but then you there's the wooden handle.

I have not done much research online into sites that might sell wood boiler accessories like this. I have friends that have made tools to bring the ashes to the front or to rearrange the ashes. My firebox is is really deep and I tools at home to make something. Is they a site that sells these types of tools or do I need to have one specially made? Any help would be appreciated.

I made a couple of my own using 3/4" steel pipe and a piece of flat bar 3"x 8" long welded onto the end. One is about 5' long and the other is 8' long. I also use a wooden handled rake because it's warmer on the hands than the steel.

cantoo, did you use stuff you had on hand or scrap to make it. I do know someone who weld me something like that and sounds like it works well for you.

I picked up a masonry hoe at Lowes last fall that has held up well.

I welded up a shovel to remove the ashes.  It was custom made from steel odds and ends lying around and sized to just fit through the ash door.  A welding shop could easily make something up for you if you have a basic idea of what you would like.

Mind came with a custom hoe to pull the ashes out from under the grate into a wheelbarrow or loader bucket. Works great. I use a long board to help slide in large pieces.

My Heatmor came with a scraper for the rectangular portion of the chimney that is a 4' long rod with a rectangular plate welded to the end.  The rod is centered in the plate.  It works well for moving wood around and scraping ashes into the shaker grate area.  For moving larger chunks of wood or awkward things, I keep a pair of firefighting gloves on the shelf in the boiler.  My wife wears them all the time to load the thing, but I only put them on to pick up burning wood.  When they wear out, I take them back to work and get them replaced for free since that's what I do for a living

I took a olf flat shovel with broken wooden handle cut a piece of pipe the length I wanted it and welded it where the wooden handle was....I also weld another short piece probly 4-5 inches long at end....so its a t....so you can hang it up as well...... For a scrapper to scrape ashes and coals forward.....I also took a piece of 1/8 plate 3 inches high and 5-6'' wide welded a rod to that as well,I also put two braces one from each corner of plate back to rod for support......I  welded 4-5 inch piece of pipe on the end for a t to hang up as well.... simple and they work well.....if you want pics let me know

I use a garden claw. It works really well to bring the unburnt pieces to the surface so they can burn up completely. It has a pipe welded on instead of the original handle.

I'm sorry folks. Didn't realize how old this topic was. Me being an old man I got bored and started reeding some old post and responded before I caught the date. You all overlook me.☺️

Even an old boiler needs tools to keep it efficient.
We bought our P&M second hand so it came with nothing. An email to the factory resulted in some measurements to make a hoe that would work for creosote and a poker/puller evolved out of an 8' piece of re-bar...
