Shaver Furnace / Re: shaver warranty
« on: September 27, 2013, 09:23:52 AM »
I bit the bullet and had it fixed right by a local welder.  I did away with the inspection plate on top and made the vent come out the top.  I also ran the return lines to the front of the stove.

My dealer quit shortly after I bought mine so I was dealing with "Weldrite", Shaver directly.

The ash pan latch breaking was a minoe issue compared to all the other things that have gone wrong.  It didn't loose the water this time.  Its about impossible to get any help from these guys.

Mine had a lot of flag in it. And I've had 2 different stoves that rusted through. Maybe u could jack up the front of the stove and use a shop vac to suck that crap out.

I had gotten a new stove after my first one rusted thru the bottom, but it wasnt easy.  They even let me upgrade to the 250 from the 165.   It lasted only 2 years,  I had to call about every day and most of the time they wouldn't call back.  Took all summer to get it done.  Then after I got the new one it had also sprung a leak in about the same spot only after a year. You wouldn't believe how much slag is in the bottom of the tank.  Tried to get them to do something about it but got tired of dealing with it and had a local welder fix it right.  I had all the water samples that were good but they kept saying something was corrosive in my water.

Stove has been workin good all Winter but went out Sunday to find water all over the concrete.  I thought for sure it had sprung another leak but come to find out it boiled over due to the latch thats welded to the stove had broke off.  Lasted 3 years.  And you can tell where they tried to weld it and kind of missed the part that needed welded.

Im on my second shaver and they have both rusted out.  Had to repair the second one as they would no longer talk to me on the phone.  Poor quality and full of crap.

When I had the welding done on mine I had him do away with the top plate on the back and we ran the vent straight out the top so you can fill the water jacket completely up.

Yeah I agree, dont leave it empty during the off months.  I also hope you have the blower mod to shut off the air supply or you will be adding water a lot.  After I did it I never have to add any.  And a 1/2" is the firebox,  the water tank on the other hand is as thin as can be.  I could go on and on but you just need to search around on this Shaver thread.  You'll learn a lot.

I've done been down this road.  The first shaver 160 I had lasted 2 years and rusted out a hole in the bottom.  Fought with them for some time and they gave me a new 250 to compensate for the trouble.  After begging a lot.  Then the 250 completely rusted the bottom of the water jacket out.  I could jab a screw driver thru it.  I fought and fought with them some more and they wouldn't help me out anymore.  And this was with water samples to back it up. They kept saying there was something in my water that was corrosive. I finally took it to a local welder and he replaced the bottom and the top which was also rusting out.  Cost me about $800.  You wouldn't believe how much slag from the welding that they just left in the tank.  Those guys are a joke and a rip off.  You might as well just get it fixed because before long they wont even answer you calls anymore.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Fan forced vs. draft induction
« on: January 24, 2013, 02:09:14 PM »
Today I let the boiler get down to low (127*) and when I filled it and tried the draft air and the chimney was about 700* (hickory wood) but when I shut the draft and turned the fan back on it dropped to about 525-550*.  Definetly a hotter fire.  It took about 40min. to get to that 700*.

The fan is on the back of the stove and blows to the front and up thru a grate. It's a 75cfm fan. It just seems maybe that the fan blows the heat out the chimney. ??

So I did a little experiment by shutting down the fan and then leaving the ash door open about 3-4".  Such a better fire than with the fan. Chimney got really hot!  My air comes from under the fire.  Be nice if I could modify it to work with draft.

Shaver Furnace / Re: stove rusted out around pipe and inspection plate

Good luck getting any help from those idiots. My stove rusted out as well. I had the bottom and top replaced by a local welder. Cost me about $900. If  that inspection plate is not sealed really well you are gonna leak out a lot of steam and loose water. When I had the top replaced I had him do away with that plate so it's all solid.
