Plumbing / 5 Wrap vs Logstor/Thermopex??
« on: December 03, 2018, 08:28:56 AM »
I'm wondering if there is a noticeable difference between these underground pipes?   I currently have 5 wrap that is buried 36"-48" underground.  I'm considering tearing it out and installing either Logstor or Thermopex to try and save on wood consumption.  Im about 75' from the house.

Plumbing / Splicing underground piping
« on: October 29, 2018, 07:53:55 AM »
As I've written in previous posts, I'm in the process of rebuilding our house from a fire.  I have 5wrap underground pex that was buried 4' underground that went into the basement.  After the fire and the excavation for the new foundation, the line is now 15ft from the house.  Can I splice this to get the rest of the way to the house, or do I need to run a new line from OWB to house?

I believe I have read before not to splice pex underground, but don't understand why.  I found that Thermopex makes a really good splicing kit.  If splicing is ok to do, can I put pex inside a 6" tile with insulation around the pipes and then run it into the basement?

Plumbing / New House....New Setup
« on: September 25, 2018, 10:20:01 AM »
Unfortunately, my 4 year old house burned to the ground this last spring.  We have just begun to rebuild and am thinking of doing a different setup in regards to heat.  Previously, I was heating my DHW and house heat through an exchanger in my forced air furnace.  The return line went to my 4 car garage for radiant floor heat.

To cut down on the stress of keeping the burner going all winter, here is my new plan.
--Incoming line to plate exchanger for DHW and then going to radiant floor in basement.  I will no longer use it in my forced air furnace.  From there I can go back to my garage, or run a separate line from the burner to the garage.  Not sure what is best.  I will be putting a hanging furnace unit in the garage instead of radiant floor heat.  The floor heat was nice, but for me the cost for installation wasnt worth it.

Any thoughts on this?  I thought about supplementing heat by putting a wood stove in the basement, but not sure if that would do much for the house. Obviously, the radiant floor in basement will take care of the basement itself.  House is about 6000sqft with high ceilings

Plumbing / Plate size for in floor heat
« on: December 19, 2017, 04:42:22 PM »
Ive been wanting to hook up the in floor heat in my garage for a few years, but never got around to it.  I decided to treat myself and hire a professional.  I got home today to see what was done, and Im concerned about the heat plate exchanger.  Its very small ( about the size of my hand).  The plate exchanger that I installed for my dhw was a large 30 plate.  Did I go overkill, or did this guy undersize my garage??

This garage loop is coming from the return line and will heat a 4 car garage.  Any thoughts?  Ill call them tomorrow, but wanted to check with you guys first.

HeatMaster / Mf10000e Overheating
« on: November 24, 2017, 06:39:10 PM »
I came home tonight and saw steam coming from the water filll opening on top.  Water temp was 208.  I cranked up the furnace and turned on the bathtub, and got the temp down.  Obviously, something is broke but Im not sure what.  The pump is running, and there is a lot of ash dust in the rear compartment.

I played with the thermostat to try and get the fan to turn on, but it wont turn on now.  Damper solenoid is in the down position.  Any ideas on where to start?  Ive replaced the damper solenoid a few times before.  I cant figure out why the fan wont turn on.  It must have been running when it overheated.

Equipment / Skid steer splitter purchase
« on: November 22, 2016, 06:20:14 PM »
Im in the market for a new splitter for my skid steer.  I already have a county line 20 ton for smaller stuff.  Using this splitter kills my back with big rounds, hence the skid splitter.  Im having a hard time picking one.  I think 30 ton would be better than 20 ton.

Some of these splitters have wedge attached to the ram, while others have the wedge against the back plate.  I could possibly see if a piece didnt completely split, then it may be advantageous to have the wedge against the back plate so you could push it through with another log.  Ramsplitter is local to my area, but their wedges are attached to the ram.

Plumbing / Hooking up Radiant Floor in Garage
« on: November 16, 2016, 02:31:13 PM »
I finished  insulating my 20x44 garage, and am ready to hook up the radiant floor. Naturally, I have a few questions along with a plan.  My plan is to T off my return line and install a 30 plate fphe.  From there, Ill run into a thermostatic mixing valve-->pump (not sure on size)-->to manifolds.

Im going to put antifreeze in lines.  Is RV antifreeze what I want?  How do I guesstimate needed volume?  I want to keep a thermostat in the garage, but dont know how to tie that into my system.

Appreciate any and all input.  Im on my 3rd year with my OWB, and, have done all install myself.  None of which would be possible without this site.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Heating a Basement with Radiant??
« on: October 22, 2015, 11:40:32 AM »
Now that I have 1 year with my OWB under my belt, I'm thinking of adding to my usage.  Currently, my incoming line runs to DHW and then to forced air furnace.  My house is fairly new,  and had them install lines in the basement floor for future heating.  The basement has an exposure( if that matters) and is unfinished.  The duct work in the basement is always closed and it is still plenty warm.   The stair case from the main floor to the basement is open and the subfloor is not insulated.  My question is: Is it going to help me out from an efficiency level to hook up my floor heat in the basement?   Or is it better to wait until I finish the basement and just enjoy the warmth on my feet then?  If you feel that a lot of heat from the basement floor would rise to my main floor and be more efficient than solely running the forced air furnace, then I feel it would be worth it.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Burning Coal
« on: October 13, 2015, 07:28:14 PM »
Firing up in a few weeks for another long winter.  I may have access to a dump truck load of coal, but not sure if I want to deal with it.  Ive read previous posts on the topic.  Im considering using it only for the coldest times of the year.  For the guys that have burned coal.....is it worth it?  Would you do it again?  Im not sure what kind of coal it is.

Equipment / Question for Skid Steer Owners
« on: March 02, 2015, 03:48:49 PM »
I was cutting wood this past weekend with a guy who has a skid steer with a grapple and I was blown away.  Picking up huge oak trunks and cleaning up the ground with the rake on the grapple was a big time saver.  Naturally, I want to buy one now.  I have a John Deere compact tractor that I use to drag wood out of the woods, but it doesn't have the power to lift large logs.  I need to sell this before purchasing a skid steer.  My question is: how do you like your skid steer for working in the woods, and other yard type projects?  My john Deere has a backhoe and mower that I'd be giving up, but I think it would be worth it.  Would you buy a skid steer again for gathering firewood?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / What to do when on vacation??
« on: February 02, 2015, 07:49:49 AM »
I'll be leaving for a little fun in the sun in 2 weeks, and am not sure the best approach to take with the OWB as this is my first year.  I know that I need to keep the water pump running.  Is it best to let it burn down to ash, or shut it down with some coals left?  Not sure if I could get the coals to light back up when I return.  I want to have the OWB off, and the house furnace on before I leave for peace of mind.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Developing a coal bed
« on: November 02, 2014, 05:18:56 AM »
For the life of me I cant get my boiler to stay lit.  Everyday it will at some point go out.  Ive received great pointers from folks on this site, but Ive still failed.  I've been burning only small pieces of wood in order to get a good bed of coals.  I had great burns for the last 24 hours.  When I woke up to a cold house this morning, I knew it had gone out again.  Is it possible that theres something wrong with the unit?

Ive experimented with temp settings, and I'm curently set at 180 with a differential of 5.  I have friends who have different brands of boilers, and they cant seem to figure it out either.  I'm ready to put it on craigslist.  Any thoughts??

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Best location for the fire
« on: October 30, 2014, 07:04:40 AM »
I'm referring to inside the firebox.  Is it best to have the wood moved toward the front, middle, rear, or the entire box?  My fan seems to push the most air up from the rear of the box, but it's a lot easier to load wood towards the front.  I'm having an awful time keeping my fire going, and was wondering if this detail matters.  Fire went out again last night.  Woke up to cold house and cold shower :bash:
