Central Boiler / Re: 5036 cenral boiler
« on: November 09, 2009, 11:28:45 AM »
I heat a 2000 sf. house and @1000 sf. beauty shop/garage. The 5036 is also going through water heaters in both buildings. Last winter while daytime high temps. were in the 20's I never had to fill less than 12 hrs. apart. I also set both stats at 73 degrees. I do lower boiler temperature setpoint when weather permits. The last few days here the daytime high's have been 60-70 degrees and in the 45-50 at nite. I lowered the 5036 to 150 and haven't add wood since 11-7 am. I'm no expert-this is only my second season. But I've saved lots of $$$$ in propane since the install..

Welcome!  I would think that with your sq. footage, and good insulation there should be no problems heating your home. If you can't make 12hrs. between filling try mixing your wood. (ex. seasoned and semi-seasoned)  This fall I started with well seasoned and split wood. I didn't get the long burn times as in the past so I'm mixing in rounds and other wood thats less than 6 months cut.    Keep us informed on how it's working when it gets real cold...

I agree that $1000.00 is a fair price. Payback would be quick-go for it!!!! I know people using hardy's for 25-30yrs....

Jack, I've been burning a cb with a cap for 2 years. Last spring during very long burn times my cap/spark arrestor filler up with creosate and had to be taken down and cleaned.. Right now I'm still using it but if it gets clogged again it's gone!!

Been there! Got Hammered Too! Willie's right, if you use your owb as directed, there souldn't be any problems..Wet/non-seasoned wood creates alot of smoke and waste alot of energy from the owb.

Don't ever plan to hook the propane to this one. It has very large burners. Just plan to valve into it when boiler is cookin.

I picked up a 2-year old 100gal. A.O. Smith water heater at a school auction the other day for $70. After I won the item, the school manager told me it cost the school $9000.00 in 2007. It has 1 1/2"water inlet/outlets on both sides and on the top. I plan to install flatplate exchangers on both sides and  run water in/out of the top. Downside,, it's 6 1/2 ft. tall and  very heavy.

I know 4 people burning Central Boilers that are between 5-10 years old. I do know someone using a Hardy that's been burning for 20-25 yrs.

Central Boiler / Re: Water nitrite problems??
« on: July 04, 2009, 03:05:09 PM »
Test kit cost @20. If water is within the correct ph and nitrite range, I would guess you could probably run about 20 test. If your nitrite test results are high, you will use alot of chemical to obtain your test results.

Most all of owb users are very happy with their own boiler/furnace. In my area i work with 2 central boiler users, 2 Hardy and 1 aqua-therm. All are happy. All are alittle different in some ways. Good luck!! :)

I'm burning a cb5036 in central ky. Heating a 2000sqft home and 1000 sqft. shop.(2-forced air furnaces, 2 water heaters.) Researched all available owb's. Very happy with central boiler..Looking at other sites,, I've noticed little difference in wood usage between regular owb and gasifiers. I may be wrong.  I've never had to fill more than every 12-hours. I do wish I'd enclosed the area surrounding the boiler. I'd agree with willie that it will make a difference.

Plumbing / Flatplate!!
« on: June 12, 2009, 07:58:19 PM »
Anyone have any ideal what size flatplate exchanger I would need to supply the cold water inlet side of a water heater. I have a 6-plate hooked to the drain and pop-off location like a side-arm, but i do run out off hot water after 2 baths. Been thinking for awhile about adding another exchanger to the inlet of the waterheater. Any ideals????
