Central Boiler / Re: Insulation in side door
« on: October 30, 2012, 09:20:18 AM »
There is NEVER a disadvantage to insulating in regards to a radiant system, the more heat you keep - the less wood you burn.  I've actually seen people forget to insulate perimeter of a radiant slab  :bash: and they have some very nice green grass in January and February all the way around the house/garage/whatever

If its a closed system you could use steel tubing, but if its an OPEN system which I suspect it is - you have to use Brass, Copper, PEX, Bronze or Stainless components otherwise the oxygen will go after the weakest Ferrous link and then you get to replace/replumb in a year or two..

I saved my self the hassle and put my pumps in the building that they heat and insualted the bejesus out of the PEX pipes coming out the back

If you are running a Heat exchanger, it is VERY beneficial (possibly manditory) to run a Y-strainer - less you run the risk of plugging it up.  You could also run some rust inhibitor in the OWF water, may need to check on an annual basis to keep in check.

Food for thought, might want to fab some kind of metal bracket that use the bolts from the pump flange as a rigid mount.  With also help with some of the PEX movement when you crank that 180f water thru the pipes.  Good luck, and can't wait from more pics

Nice pictures, and great progress.

Not to be super picky, but shouldn't those pumps be supported a bit more?  They look kind of precarious, with the white srap and what not.
Also since PEX pipe is technically not rigid pipe, might need a few more supports?

Not sure if you are done with the install yet, but a little bit of insualtion on those lines goes along way towards keeping the heat in the pipes.  Only reason I say that is the first season I ran with out insulation in the mechanical room and wowsers it got HOT, second season insulated and probably droped the temp in that littel room a good 10-20 degrees air temp.

Have you thought about the use of closely spaced tees, especially if the load is no that large and then you would be able to controler via a thermostat, pump and relay

A GREATLY understated the complexity of my heating system, but there is a Termostatic valve between the Boiler and the Heat exchanger, also currently there is a very small load on the boiler maybe 50k vs 180k output; that will change in a year or two when the house gets build.  Also, I do have a LP boiler (back-up/boost) plumbed in case the boiler is unable to keep up with the system (aka snowmelt runs) or failure; I HATE not having backup plans for heating systems.

Fire Wood / Re: Cutting firewood
« on: August 21, 2012, 02:32:15 PM »
I always just use a cheater stick (aka a small branch) that I would cut to the desired length for firewood (formerly 16" now 24", went from indoor wood stove to outdoor boiler).  Then after an hour I would throw the stick away and cut it like HandyMark - eyeball it

I woudl call you local Plumbing Supplier; but make sure you know the approximate heat loss of your slab, the expected head loss and flow; cause they will ask that information to properly size a heat exchanger.

I am not trying to run everything on one loop; garage loop is 1", house loop is 1 1/4" & still have room for one more loop off of the boiler.  In regards to Primary/Secondary, all the loops from the boiler will be seperated by Heat Exchangers, so that the sytem in the structures is closed loop, while the boiler is open system.

Scott7m, what I was trying to elude about the pump was, by going with large pipe you are able to effectively reduce some of the head pressure associated with a smaller PEX pipe; YES you will still have some head pressure associated with any elevation changes.
Also, it does matter what your BTU load is because if you undersize your feedline, your building will not warm up cause it not able to transfer enough energy from the boiler (water jacket) to the building.

In my current installation the smallest feed line I run is 1", cause I go from the boiler (open system) thru a Heat exchanger and out to the garage (4000 sf).  When I build the house, I plan on running 1 1/4", so that I add some Snowmelt, THROW AWAY THE SHOVEL AND BUY AN EXTRA SPLITTING MAUL.

I kind of relate it back to the building of a house, you can either pay for a lot of insulation up front, or pay for it every year you use the OWB.  By the way make sure you have the lawnmower blade nice and sharp so you can mow the grass above the line in January, just kidding - I hope.

I recently heard of a District Heating site, where they had a single run of 600' but they were also running 4" supply and return.  I think max length of run depends on your distribution pipe size and your pump.  Definate  on the build; how large is the water jacket, and what kind of BTU's are you pulling.
