Seems like a nice lower price option then an all in radiant system especially when you are doing some old house renovations?

Portage & Main / set temp and differential on the BL series
« on: October 07, 2014, 09:23:45 AM »
Hey guys.  Got the BL 3444 running.  All is well.  I was just wondering from people who used them last year about set points and differentials depending on the time of year.  What works best for you guys.  Right now I am at 189 degrees with a 5 degree dif?  When it gets colder I was thinking of opening up the dif to 10 degrees or maybe more?  Does this make sense, what works for all of you?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Indoor boiler question
« on: October 05, 2014, 07:39:40 AM »
I know some of you are experts on this......  My indoor boiler which is heated via my p&m 3444 is giving me problems.  First issue is my pressure gauge is reading 39 psi at 180 degrees.  I think from what I have read that is to high?? Also The only way I can get it to pump water to my upstairs zones is to have my pump on level 3 (high).

Any thoughts?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / need help!
« on: September 23, 2014, 12:22:51 PM »
I plumbed the back of my wood boiler in with 1" copper.  My plan was to just connect the copper directly to my underground pipe via sharkbite.  Unfortunately my underground is Pex-al-pex,  The sharkbite will not work on the Pex-al-pex because of its larger diameter.

How can I hook my copper to my Pex-al-pex??????????? :o

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / 500 Gallon propane tank
« on: June 05, 2014, 12:48:36 PM »
I am trying to sell one.  It is empty,  Does anyone know approx value of one of these things.  The local propane company is offering me $575.  Seems fair but I just wanted to make sure.

If anyone wants to buy it from me cut it in half and make a home made boiler, I will give you a discount. ;)

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Water heater ?
« on: February 06, 2014, 08:42:17 AM »
Hey all.  So the last thing in my house that sips propane is my hot water heater, and thats only in the summer.  I have to fire up my old in efficent boiler just to have hot water.  I have a boier mate hot water system which workds great when the OWB is fired so i dont want to rip that out.  I would like to get ride of the propane all together, I dont want to fire the OWB all summer so for a few months I would just like electric hot water.

Any suggestions?  I was thinking of plumbing in a electric hot water heater on a ball ball valve, so I would use the boiler mate when OWB was fired and switch over to electric in the summer.  Are there any other suggestions any one can think of?

Who has dealt with these pumps.  They are $$ but supposedly sip electricity.  I guess you have to figure out what your breakeven point from an electrical standpoint is.  It may take a few years to just payback the difference.  The price on these units has been coming down.  I also wonder about the longevity of the new technology that they employ.  Also they have a digital readout that tells you flow and how many amps it is drawing at a given time so that means there is some sort of computer on board, how long will that last????  Just looking for some real life experiences with these units.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / underground pipe under driverway

So my question is should any extra precautions be made going beneath a gravel driveway?  Would hate to crush that pipe or damage the outer tile.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / will this work???
« on: January 23, 2013, 09:01:14 AM »
So I have an old farmhouse (1850) 2750 sq feet.  Some of this is new construction and the windows are all new.  Not great insulation in the old part of the house but not bad either.  The house has a boiler with baseboard heat as well as a new forced air furnace.  The previous owner told me he put the forced air in for 2 reasons.  1 for ac and 2 that during really cold spells the baseboard heat just was not enough.

I decided to hook up my owb via the boiler for a couple reasons one was the hot water and the other was the fact that we liked the idea of the baseboard instead of the furnace blowing air around the house.

Up until this recent cold spell I could keep the whole house pinned at 75.  With the super cold weather and the wind finally the baseboard lost the battle.  The house dropped to like 65.  No biggie unless you ask my wife and kids.

So here is my question I have plenty of btu's stored in my owb I just cant get enough of them into the house.  Could I set up a new zone valve (off of the boiler) and run a hx to my forced air furnace, set the thermostat for the furnace 5 degrees under the base board heat and on the rare occasion that the baseboard could not keep up it would open the zone valve and turn on the blower?

This is just a though I had, but I think it may work.

What do the experts think???
