Burning during heavy rain
« on: January 10, 2014, 05:45:12 PM »

With 3/4 to 1inch of rain expected here tonight/tomorrow I am wondering what other members do during heavy rains? I set my differential to 5 degrees to try to keep the chimney somewhat dry but other than a cap (I don't have one) is there any thing I should do or don't worry about it?

I haven't worried about it any. I haven't seen anyone around here running a cap so I never did. Whether its right or not I don't know. Maybe one of the dealers here will say different.

don't sweat it.  the fire in the firebox will overcome the amount of water that will actually enter the firebox via the chimney.  the water usually transitions to steam before even hitting the firebox and goes right back out the chimney.  if you're really worried about it, put a chimney cap on, although the cap won't last long when the creosote that builds up in the chimney lights off.

Do nothing..No cap here..You got a live fire in the stove…Rain won't affect your stove or pipe at all…If you had no fire in your boiler..Id be telling you to put a bucket over your chimney

Another experiment I wanted to try is taking 1 gallon of water and dump it down my chimney and then have another person watch from the inside to see how much saturation would even take place.

Victor, with experiments like that, you would be a manufacturers nightmare customer.

Thanks for the info folks. Maybe I will stop listening to the weather reports as they seemed to be wrong again....................BIG SURPRISE.
Anyway I think I will get a cap to have handy for the next false alarm and just take it back off once the threat of a big rain has passed. Also I can put it on for the off season.

Lmao! That's funny, if you need a second person to help call me.

BTW I'll pour the water. I can't get wet, I melt.  ;D

I would bet it would be a steam show and hardly any water would saturate to ash.
