Central Boiler / Re: E3200 users

On my fourth season on a E3200.   Finally running good.  Musts are dry wood.  Aged for 2 to 3 years.  If you can figure out the settings of the air cover height correctly it will burn clean.   But with stock settings it will smoke worse than a fire place burning green wood.

If you want a pain in the rear get the E3200.   No hard wood is best.

Adjust primary solenoid so it opens to max

Secondary low and high adjust solenoid so they only open about 1/8 to 3/16 of a inch.   Then I put a 18x28 inch 3/8 steel plate on top of the secondary air tube with a 8 x 6 inch opening above the refractory.   Providing a better separation of the primary burn chamber and the secondary air tube.  Highest burn temp after changes is 1784 degrees.   Very clean and efficient now.

Last year I burned 17 cord.  This year maybe 10.

They sent me everything I needed with instructions for my XP wireless kit.  I did need a fish tape to run some of the wires in the internal electrical conduit.

I have used the history feature to see how the boiler has been running.  I can go back to last year to compare small changes to tune my boiler.    I Wake up in the morning and I can tell if I need wood now or it can wait till I have coffee.  If traveling I can watch the boiler on my smart phone and text my wife that it is time to fill the boiler.   She don't like filling the boiler if it is burning.  Lots of smoke.  I try to tell her before the boiler start a burn cycle.  Plus I can tell when she filled the boiler.

I have been using the xp wireless since November 2012.

I added XP wireless to my 2011 E3200.  Had to change to newer green controller.  Plus add a few wires from controller to air box.  Love it.   I used 15 ft of direct burial cat 5 to connect boiler to wireless controller.  Carries signal and power on the cat 5.  Only used 4 of the wires.  Two for power and two for signal.   Then wireless from there.

Now I know my highest burn temp was 1776 deg.  Hit 1730 last night with the outside temp 5. Now 0 and expecting -17 in two days.
Bur.

My pulse timer is set at 25 sec every 60 min.   Makes plenty of charcoal.   Summer I was doing 260 seconds every hour.

Trick is don't let the ash build up to much with the coals.  To much ash and you will smother the coal fire.  Lots of coals with little ash is great. Burns hot and clean.  Lots of ash and will not burn clean.  You can put out a fire with just ashes.

The type of wood also makes a difference.  All soft wood will burn hotter but will burn out quick.   But all hard wood will smoke a bit.  Mix in some hard woods to keep from getting the FO  alarm.  Fire out.  With a good mix of wood I can go 1 hour with a 4 minute pulse all summer long.

Starting 4th year now.  Should have replaced door seal two years ago.  Must be tight.  It has been a picky beast.

I just changed my door seal on my E3200.  I think it is the same for the E2400.  About $50 on ebay.  Burns way better now.  Seal was 3 old.  Should have done it after 2 years.  Only took 5 min to change the seal.  The seal came out very easy and little cleaning for new one.  I expected the worst but was glad to see the metal in very good shape.

Central Boiler / Re: Soleniod Problems
« on: November 11, 2013, 10:00:47 AM »
Just got off the phone with the dealer.  He said controller is BAD :bash:.  Last night I went down and had the power on the controller "off" BUT it was still pulling power to the high secondary soleniod (Sam-tip sounds like the same thing).  With the power off the soleniod was reading 95-110 and pulling the cap for the tube up and just humming and chattering.  I turned the power on and it stayed running but as soon as I opened the furnace door and it would call for the fan to kick on and the fuse would blow and I was done.  The dealer said the controller is bad and CB is now providing controllers with a "surge protector" built into them.  I asked why and he said they found out with "spikes" in power supply that is cooks the controllers.  Another great start to the season.  Thanks for everyones help and I am sure I will be visiting this site again!

Sounds just like what happened to me.   I was also getting 120 volt DC to the solenoid when off.  BAD!

I had to replace my controller twice and a few solenoids.  The control kept taking out the high secondary solenoid.  To get by I just unhooked the solenoid.  It would burn ok with out it.  Burns better with it.

It takes four wires to connect the wireless to the Firestar II controller.   Two wires for data to the boiler and two wires to power the wireless box.  A cat5 will work fine.  From there it is wireless.  You must have wireless internet.  The power is just low voltage DC.  I ran mine off a 9 volt battery for about an hour.  A small AC to DC converter is included.

I put my wireless box in my garage so I get its power there.  Only two wires go to the boiler for data.  I just used a cat 5 direct burial cable to the boiler.  I just use one pair of wires for the data.  From the house to the garage is all done by wireless internet repeater.

boilerman I love the wireless XP.   The problem was on Central Boilers end.  It took the  IT guy about 3 minutes to reset something and it was working.  I use the history graph to monitor how the boiler runs over night.  I can tell if the wood is getting low by watching the temps on the graph.  Or when it ran out of wood.  Also by watching the history I can predict when is the best time to put more wood in without getting lots of smoke in face.  If I load it just before the boiler turns on for heat demand I don't smell like smoke.  The wireless XP is a very useful tool.  I have made a few changes to the timing by going over the history logs and it has decreased my wood usage.

My XP module died on me.  It still displayed the temps but the blue light started flashing.  I added a wireless repeater and that helped for a month.  Then the blue light started flashing again.  I had to replace the XP module.   Now the new XP module connects to the internet but I can’t see the readings on line.  The module says OK if I push the down button.  So the new xp module is  connecting to Central Boiler.  I have checked the serial number.  I have reentered the serial number.  Central Boiler did say there is a bug in the software on the first units.

As a owner of a 2011 E3200 this post has me worried.   I have had many problem but no leaks yet.   I did have to replace the primary air inlet tube because of rust.  It just fell apart when I cleaned it last spring 2012.  With the new springs on the covers I hope this one lasts longer.  I keep my set point at 192 - 195.  I am now going to do another water test. Just for peace of mind.

This year I have had solenoid problems from the controller.   I have found it burns hotter if I unhook the secondary high solenoid.  It forces more air into the primary burn chamber by only using the low secondary solenoid. Otherwise it just pushes all the air out the two secondary tubes and the E3200 burns cold and smokes allot.   The E3200 has change allot from 2011 to 2012.  The primary air channels look much bigger.  Less restrictive and have added air holes.  I feel the 2011 E3200 does have a few design flaws.  Controller programming problems and primary air flow issues.
