General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Water treatment for a Hardy
« on: June 12, 2012, 07:34:38 AM »
Does anyone have recommendations on what type of water treatment I should use for my Hardy H2?  I noticed a slight film of buildup on the inside of my pex when I disconnected it from the pump.  I am hoping that I can just use treatment next year to stop this issue.  Thanks guys!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Good thing I kept it goin!
« on: April 06, 2012, 08:03:20 AM »
The weather here has been crazy! With the past two or so weeks the highs have been in the upper 70's to mid 80's.  I contemplated shutting the OWB down several times but I kept it going.  Well, the nice weather has come to an end as it was 33 deg this morning when I woke up.   The 10 day forcast doesnt show high temps above 70 so I should get quite a bit of use out of Mr. Smokey before I shut him down for the summer

Equipment / Fiskars Axe
« on: February 22, 2012, 08:08:14 AM »
I just went to Sears and picked up a Fiskars Pro Splitter Axe and this thing is awesome! I really wanted the X27 which is a little bit longer but this one will do for now.  If you haven't ever seen these axe's before look them up on YouTube.  They only weigh 4 lbs and split like a 10 lb maul.  I'm impressed!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Anybody use rain water?
« on: February 15, 2012, 09:21:10 AM »
Do any of you use rain water for your OWB?  I was told that rain water is the best to use.  I have a friend that has a bunch of plastic barrels and I was thinking about making some sort of system to collect enough water to fill my wood burner.  I think I would hook it up to my gutters and then find some way to filter it before I put it in the boiler.  If any of you have a setup like this would you mind sharing information or pictures?  Thanks!

I have been having problems with my fire box door sticking from the creosote buildup, and my little scraper just wasn't doing the trick.  So, last night when I got home I started to scrape the buildup by hand and wasn't getting hardly anywhere with it.  I figured that there had to be an easier way to clean this stuff.  So, I headed for the shop.  Right when I walked in I noticed my drill sitting there. So, I threw in one of these wire wheels and went to town on the stove.  After about two minutes I had all of the creosote off of the area that the fire rope touches.  Works much better now!

I have been looking around on the internet for a unit heater that is already put together meaning, they already have the hx, fan and all of that stuff attached together as one unit.  When looking around, none of them say anything about a filter.

I will be using this out in my shop where there can be quite a bit of dust at times.  Shouldn't these have a filter on them to keep the hx from getting clogged up? I would think it would be a pain to try and clean the dust out of the hx several times per heating season.  Thanks!

Electronics / Solenoid Humming
« on: February 03, 2012, 12:33:12 PM »
Last night I noticed that my solenoid was making a loud humming noise while the fan was in operation.  I noticed that when I tapped it with my hand it quit making the noise.  When the blower kicked back on later in the night I noticed that the solenoid was making the same noise.  It doesn't make any noise when the furnace is idle, just when it calls for heat and the solenoid in energized.  Does it sound like the solenoid is going bad or is this normal?  It has only been in operation for about 2 weeks now.  Thanks!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Possible water leak?
« on: February 02, 2012, 07:38:12 AM »
My Hardy H2 has been running for a little over a week now and I haven't had any issues.  But, Tuesday when I got home from work I noticed that the low water level light was on.  I had a gallon jug of water handy so I poured half of it in and the light went off.   Last night the light was on again so I just went ahead and poured an entire gallon in.  I can't see any water leaking anywhere on the stove.  I looked around the doors, the plumbing in the back of the unit and in my house.  The only thing that I can think of is that it is leaking in the firebox.  Do any of you have any suggestions on how to find a leak like this? I’m just guessing that it is a leak because the stove shouldn't evaporate water that quickly should it?  Thanks!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Advice on fixing fire rope
« on: January 31, 2012, 08:43:19 AM »
Hi all,
I have had my Hardy H2 up and running for a little over a week now and everything is going good.  There is only one thing that I need to fix.  The last couple of times I have loaded my stove the fire rope has came loose when I open the door.  It is caused my creosote building up around the rope and makes it stick when I open the door causing the rope to stay stuck to the opening and it comes out of the channel when I open the door.  The rope was brand new when I first lit up the stove so I would really hate to replace the whole thing.  Is there any way to fix this? Can I just pull the rope out and put some more silicone in there and close it back up? I try to clean the creosote off of the rope and door opening as best as I can but the rope just isnt sticking in the channel like it should.  Thanks!

Plumbing / PEX-AL-PEX???
« on: January 19, 2012, 02:17:53 PM »
When I bought my used Hardy H2 I also bought 85 ft PEX that was two pipes for the heater and 2 pipes for the DHW.  85 ft will get me into my basement but I will need to add about 20ft of pipe to make it to my heat exchanger and my water heater.  I am having a hard time finding any fitting that will work with what I have.  From what I have found on the internet it sounds like what I have is called PEX-AL-PEX.  It is orange and has a layer of aluminum in between two layers of plastic and it says 5/8" on the pipe but the outside diameter is 3/4.  Does anyone know if I can connect this type of pipe to normal PEX? And what type of fitting do I need to use if I can?   Thank you!!

Hardy / Bought a Hardy that got a little hot...
« on: January 09, 2012, 11:04:59 AM »
Hey guys! It's been a while since I have been on here but I just recently bought a Hardy H2 that had been involved in a fire.  The wood pile around the heater caught on fire and melted the electrical components on the back of the stove.  I bought this on ebay for $420 (I think it was a good deal)  I also bought 83ft of the 4 tube pex for $130.  I have started pricing all of the parts for it but I can't seem to find a few of them.  Do you guys know if Hardy has a parts list with prices or do you have to call a dealer?  I have prices on everything but I'm hoping to find a few things for a little bit cheaper but so far the total on parts will only be $310.  How much are you guys heating with one of these?  I have a 1500 sq ft house and a well insulated 1600 sq ft shop.  Do you think I will have any issues heating both of these? I am only going to hook it up to the house for this winter but plan on having the shop heated by it for next winter.  I have 40% of propane left in my tank so my goal is to have it up and running but the 1st of February! I better get busy! Here are a few pics of the stove.  I will post more as soon as I make some progress.

Home Made / Found OWB Plans on the Internet
« on: November 10, 2010, 10:33:20 AM »
Hello everyone,
I was on this forum a few years back when I was thinking of buying a woodmaster 4400 however, I decided to put up my 36x45 building instead (which I am glad I did).   I have decided that I am going to build my own wood burner.  I recently came across a website that sells OWB plans for around $30.  The designs are pretty simple but I am worried that the design I am interested in building will not produce enough BTU's for what I am wanting to do.  I will be heating my building with R-19 in the walls and R-50 in the ceiling which should heat pretty good as well as my 1500 square foot house which is 80 years old and drafty.  I recently blew in R-50 insulation in the ceiling which I'm hoping will pay off this winter and help with heating costs.  I dont plan on heating domestic water as of right now.  The firebox on the design is 20 cubic feet and will hold approx. 90 gallons of water and is estimated at 125,000 BTU's.  Do any of you think that will put off enough heat to heat my house and building?  if not, any suggestions on improving the BTU output?  I thought about changing the design and making both the firebox and water jacket larger, and also running the water return through a series of pipes inside of the firebox.  Below is the link for DEB Designs website, I have been looking at the "Outdoor Wood Stove Plan IV"  http://www.deb-design.com/  any input would be very helpful.  Thank you in advance,  Alex.  P.S.  I live in central Illinois if that helps at all.
