General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / States not enforcing the federal EPA OWB rules???
« on: November 25, 2016, 01:03:04 PM »
I was recently talking with a factory that is actively selling non EPA certified wood boilers. He initially said the law hasn't gone into effect yet. Then I said I thought it went into effect Jan 1, 2016 to which he responded that it hasn't in our state (WI). He continued to say that WI, Michignan, Illinois and a few others weren't enforcing the EPA law. It seems kind of fishy to me so I thought I would try to seek the truth from some of you informed members. Are there some states where they are able to sell non EPA boilers?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / How deep did you bury your water lines?
« on: November 01, 2016, 03:10:04 PM »
Just wondering how deep everyone buried their lines. I understand if you are going under a driveway or going to be driving over it, it is necessary to go deep. Any other reason to bury them more than a foot or so down?

HeatMaster / 2015 Heatmaster MF 10000e
« on: October 25, 2016, 01:55:32 PM »
I will likely be selling a brand new, never installed 2015 heatmaster MF10000e. I bought this with intentions of hooking it up at my new house but have since decided to put one inside the detached garage and pipe a line to the house. Just wondering what you guys think it is worth and if I have to be careful of anything selling a non epa stove??

Portage & Main / Optimizer 250 Upgrades
« on: December 07, 2014, 11:24:24 AM »
I bought a used Optimizer 250 at the end of September. The guy selling it was a P&M dealer who was retiring from it. I was told this unit was a prototype that P&M sent to the U.S. to have it emissions tested. After that he used it as a demo and heated his shop for 1/2 season. He told me it was two years old which I now don't believe is true. I have read through all ten pages of posts in the Portage and Main section and have learned a lot.
I have been running it for a month now and overall I am happy with it and don't have any big complaints. I am heating about 1600 sq ft upstairs to 72 degrees and about 1000 sq ft of basement that says fairly warm since I didn't insulate any of the lines in the basement. Also heating DHW with a sidearm with no problems. I understand there is a bigger learning curve that comes with running a gasification boiler. So here are some of my questions/concerns. Hopefully this helps others out there that might have some of the same. I will put a link to some pictures I took of my boiler.

1.After watching videos such as the one Coolidge has posted, I don't believe my boiler is gasifying as well as it should. It is very rare that I open the door and see what his video shows. I plan on taking a video of mine and uploading it later. I think I may just need to adjust the airflow.
2. I haven't seen any other nozzles similar to mine. I have a removable metal piece sort of a grate which covers a square nozzle. It looks like the new ones have a replaceable cast refractory nozzle that has a long narrow slit instead of a square. I plan on upgrading to this in the future but my nozzle doesn't seem to be in bad shape yet. I can get 1/4 all the way up to 1/2" thick plate steel pieces for free which will fit in place of my current one. Would it be a good idea to get some and try milling a long narrow slit in the steel similar to the current refractory nozzle on the new Optimizers?
3. I get a good amount of very fine ash in the first set of horizontal heat exchanger tubes and on that shelf. The picture shows it 5 days after I cleaned them. Is this normal or do I need to cut back the air flow?
I am burning red oak that was cut 1.5 years ago. It was dead standing with the bark off when it was cut so it was dry then already. Like I said this boiler is heating everything great and I am happy with it. I just like tinkering with things and if I can make changes to make it more efficient that would be great. I am brand new to the OWB and Gasification Boilers so if there is anything I can change/upgrade let me know. Thanks in advance and hopefully this helps others.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Wood consumption Outdoor vs Indoor
« on: November 17, 2014, 04:13:29 PM »
I have been heating my house solely with an indoor forced air wood furnace for many years and recently installed my first OWB, a P&M Optimizer 250. It seems like I have been burning through significantly more wood than I was with my indoor furnace. I am heating my DHW so I expected to burn more. But also thought the efficiency of the gasification would make up for some of that since my indoor furnace isn't much more than a firebox with a chimney out the top. I usually burn through around 5 cords with the indoor one. Just curious to see if anyone else made the switch from indoor to outdoor and how your wood consumption compares.

Central Boiler / CB E1400 vs P&M Optimizer
« on: March 12, 2014, 09:03:03 AM »
I have been researching OWBs for a couple years and I am ready to buy. I have narrowed it down to either Portage and Main Optimizer 250 or CB E1400. I am a big fan of the gasification concept and currently heat with an indoor wood furnace in my basement; so dry seasoned wood is no issue for me. I have found a used P&M Optimizer 250 and a used CB E1400 both for sale within 100 miles of my location. Both used about two seasons, prices and condition are very comparable. I have a good idea of the known problems with the P&M. Anybody know of major or reoccuring problems with the E1400 or things I should look out for if I purchase the E1400?
