General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Launched my website today
« on: September 15, 2010, 08:24:21 PM »
I took some advice of a fellow owb enthusiast and decided to make a website for my business.

It's www.freeheatstore.com , I've purchased ads and such hoping to drive some people my way.  We'll see how it pans out.

I am still adding stuff but feel I have got a good start.

I have a customer who has no duct work, but doesn't like the idea of an isolated shop-style heat exchanger.  I think that the baseboard system may be a great way for him to go, has anyone ever been in a home where the baseboards were run by an owb?  Has anyone ever installed a baseboard system?  If so what are some things to remember

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / 409 Stainless
« on: August 31, 2010, 06:39:06 PM »
we've all been led to beleive our whole lives that stainless is a superior metal for most all applications.  Most never look into the different grades of stainless.  The titanium enforced stainless 409 is what i'm questioning.

I would like to have a stainless stove to offer those who are hung up on stainless but what can anyone tell me about 409 stainless.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / As if it weren't bad enough
« on: February 28, 2009, 06:03:41 PM »
With the high cost of energy these days, our dear friend Mr.Obama announced he will be trying to impose an energy tax.  Further taxing gas and anything considered energy, yupp Electric included!

Yet another reason to buy an OWB.

What are the advantages?  I'm kinda torn on what to do?!  put it under roof or not?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Buying accessories online?
« on: January 28, 2009, 09:41:24 PM »
I talked to a dealer today, wanted 6600 for a central boiler 5036.  Then when we get to the extras, I notice things sound a lil high, like 300 for a water to water heat exchanger and such, would i be better off to buy this stuff online or just pay a lil extra to have the dealer set it all up.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Heating water
« on: January 27, 2009, 01:52:31 PM »
I see some funny gadgets people have heating their water, what type of heat exchanger does central boiler use for their hot water use?  I was under the impression you could turn your water heater off, but it appears that hot water only goes in as water goes out, which means the tank still has to maintain the temperature you want? right?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Insulation
« on: January 27, 2009, 01:28:09 PM »
I'm read a lot of posts on here people talking about increasing their insulation to make their homes more efficient.  I like efficiency and I've always kept up with insulation trends in homes and such.
One thing I hear a lot of guys on here say is that there going to add vinyl siding, vinyl siding has hardly any r value.

If you don't want to tear into the walls to do better insulating between the studs, you can place the foil type insulation on the outside of the osb board, it has a really high r value and does a great job, easy to work with.  Comes in rolls, reflective properties on each side with air bubbles in the middle.  The best insulation between the studs is the kind that is sprayed in and then shaved off even with the studs! Awesome stuff!

Windows, my dad has always been a insulation nut, so he did a lot of research on windows, and found that lowe's/home depot and those places don't sell any "high quality" windows.  My dad went to a window factory and had some custom made, slightly higher than lowes, but he got triple pane windows that were awesome!  it can be -10 and you can lay your hand on them and feel no cold at all..  The house quietened down dramatically from outside noise as well.

In attics and stuff you can also use the spray but the blow in cellulose is another good option.  Just make sure you have plenty of it as heat wants to rise.

High quality windows and top grade insulation will make any home more efficient, don't skimp on that stuff though..

Products such as vinyl siding and tyvek may help against wind, but provide little in the way of r factor.  Creating a dead air space between  your home and the outside is what it's all about!

Central Boiler / Sizing
« on: January 25, 2009, 09:31:02 PM »
I'm primarily looking at the 5036, how many sq ft will this heat under normal circumstances????

I'm looking for advice on which are the best?  I have been doing my own research and like a lof of designs that I see.

Ones thats are available in my area include Hardy, Central Boiler, and Heatmor.  I just can't figure out what I really want.  Each time you talk to a salesman they get rude and start telling you how the competitors are all just a bunch of junk.  Kinda makes me mad, because there probably isn't a great deal of difference.  Whats your guys opinion on whats the bset one out there?!
