HARDY H2 TO A CB 6048
« on: January 17, 2014, 07:20:25 AM »

I've used a hardy H2 for 10 years and the stove has done great but, with heating  40 x 40 shop w/ floor heat and a 1500 sq ft home and water some times it can not keep up. I have told the cb dealer that I will buy a 6048 that they have in stock. I was also looking at heatmasters 10,000 mf.  Any thoughts on the 6048.

How well insulated is the home and shop?  I have the Heatemaster 10,000E and I love it.  The CB and HM are two completely different stoves.  CB is carbon steel and natural draft.  HM is stainless and forced draft.  My forced draft is probably the single most important feature I like about my stove.  What state do you live in?

I can't speak to the CB6048, but I am running a CB eClassic 2400 (gasser); and it keeps up with my 48'x80' garage (kids call it the Tah Mahal) and 3000sf house (slab on grade).  I am running in slab in the garage and main floor of house, and staple up on the second floor of house.

Just looked up the HeatMasters 10000 - 500k btu, kinda fell like that is OVERKILL unless you plan on adding on or doing some snow melt

Mr. Ford Tech, I am in Knox Co. in SW Indiana.  You will need to contact CB and ask them what their documented BTU output is for the CB 6048.  Indiana is an EPA Phase II state, which means we can only install Gassers.  However, there is a provision for "industrial" sized units that allow the installation of traditional boiler IF they are documented to generate 350,000 BTU's or more.  The HM 10,000E is documented for 500,000 BTU, which is how I obtained my legally.  CB doesn't list the BTU ratings for their units on their websites, at least not that I could find.

My house and shop are very well insulated and the 6048 is 500,000 btu. Is your heatmaster easy to keep fire going, or does it ever go out ?

I've been running since mid-October and it only went out once.  It was my first week and a rookie mistake.  Hasn't gone out since.  I think you can keep just about any stove going if you do it right.  However, I like the forced air fan for quicker recoveries and a more efficient burn.

If you are well insulated, you may want to look for a smaller unit.  3100 sft of well insulated area plus domestic water might be able to work with the MF5000.  Now, don't go by me, I don't install them.  Also, getting the smaller unit would require some "creative purchasing" for living in Indiana......if you know what I mean......   >:D  If you don't know what I mean, PM me!

Just to add onto Countryboy's comment on how different those two stoves are.

HM has shaker grates standard, ash pan, and the E model has a smoke bypass for increased efficiency.
CB also has more computerized controls that are not available at the hardware store.

I'm not down on CB, but if the choice is between those two...

Good points too Mr. Racnruss.  There are several differences.  Additionally, CB uses spray foam insulation, HM is the fluffy stuff.  Not sure if it is fiberglass or bat or what exact material it is, but it's not foam.  I don't like foam for several reasons already discussed on this site.  HM sits on legs, CB on the frame.  I think generally speaking that CB's are more expensive, but there was a guy on here a few weeks ago said he got a 6048 for the exact price I got my 10,000E.  But, I don't think that's the norm.

The interesting thing about comparing the CB unit and the HM units, is one guy can like all the things about the CB and dislike all the things about HM, and the next guy be the exact opposite.  They both have great features, they just go about it differently!  I think the CB units and the HM units have about as polar opposite features about them as any 2 units on the market, but they are both very respectable products!  You will just have to list the features and see which one compiles the most likes!
