Plumbing / How can this be usable?
« on: September 13, 2021, 02:39:26 PM »
I just got a call from a customer asking about cleaning out his plate exchangers. As far as I can tell he has a 10 plate  (5x12") on the water heater and then another 10 plate in series that heats the indoor boiler. The pictures he sent look like a Grundfos 15-58 pump. (not very clear). The indoor boiler system has cast iron radiators.
He says it has been setup like this since 2008. I can't see how he can be getting more than a couple GPM through the system. I was expecting to see at least a 26-99 or larger for the pump.
I am thinking that swapping out both plates to 20's would make the system at least function ok. I normally wouldn't put a 20 on the boiler but since the 10 has supposedly been working, is there any reason to go bigger?

I have a maxim pellet boiler that I took on trade. The previous owner said it had a bad draft blower. I haven't gotten around to looking at it. Make offer if interested. Can get pictures if there is any interest.

Equipment / Wire type for trailer lights?
« on: July 31, 2019, 07:48:04 PM »
I need to completely rewire my trailer and looking for best type of wire to use. I never had much luck with the flat trailer cable wire. Also, I have a lot of marker lights so single conductor would probably work better.

What type is the best and won't fall apart from being in the sun?

Equipment / Ebay chainsaw parts
« on: June 20, 2019, 02:32:28 PM »
I ran over my Husqvarna 357XP with the Bobcat so will need to replace a bunch of parts. I see cheap new parts on ebay that I am guessing are chinese copies. Is it worth giving them a try or going with used parts?

I will need the chain brake guard, main handle and clutch cover for sure. I don't think anything major is broken but I haven't taken it apart yet. After I ran it over, the throttle trigger was jammed and the clutch cover packed with dirt. I whacked the handle a few times and the trigger popped free and I dug the dirt out of the cover. It started right up and I sawed up a few more logs so I think the engine is fine.

Plumbing / Anyone using a Ryobi pex crimper?
« on: May 22, 2019, 04:20:59 PM »
I generally don't buy Ryobi tools and have all Dewalt 20V stuff but just came across these.
https://www.ryobitools.com/search?query=pex&Search=Submit
I am thinking about getting the crimper and switching to copper rings from the cinch clamps. I use the cinch clamps now because the tool can get into tighter areas much easier than the crimpers.

General Discussion / Welding wire - .035 vs .052?
« on: April 30, 2019, 03:15:44 PM »
I usually use .035 solid welding wire but came across a roll of .052 on craigslist for cheap. ($30 for 40 pound spool) https://rockford.craigslist.org/tls/d/freeport-welding-wire-new/6870900995.html

A little research with google turned up some sites saying it was a better general purpose wire. Would it be worth getting or best to just stay with what I always have used?
I am assuming I would need to change some parts on the welder. Would it be the sleeve, feed roller, nozzle? I think I already need a new sleeve anyway.

I think this is the wire I am using now. https://www.fastenal.com/products/details/0839232

General DIY remodeling without Hydronics / Best type of closet door?
« on: April 10, 2019, 08:19:41 PM »
I am replacing the old junk sliders and haven't made of my mind what to use.
I am leaning towards bi-fold but haven't made up my mind yet.

Also, not sure what type to use. I am putting oak panel doors on the room entrances and will have stained oak molding. I really don't want to spend that much on the closet doors so have been thinking either flush oak or panel type that have to be painted.

Just looking for suggesting or hearing if you have some type that you hate.

I have 3 sets to do that are 60" openings.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Wood usage for the season?
« on: February 12, 2019, 11:13:48 PM »
Has anyone ever tracked wood usage and compared it to heating degree days? It would be interesting to see if wood usage for the rest of the season could be accurately estimated with it.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Best way to attach sensors to pipe?
« on: November 20, 2018, 11:39:23 AM »
I am starting to experiment with different ways to try getting the reading as close as possible to water temp. (probes are 1/4" diameter)
I have always just used the foil tape with the peel off backing and put all the way around pipe and sensor and then insulate.

I started out yesterday but did not insulate any yet. I am using a short section of 1" copper pipe for all sensors. I did one with the usual foil tape. I had a roll of the thinner more plastic like foil tape (IPG 698) so I tried that to see how it would compare.
I didn't have any thermal paste to test but had some ox gard compound that supposedly will transfer heat somewhat so I tried that just attaching with electrical tape.

If you have any suggestions to try, I will try it out and see how it compares. I am going to keep making changes till I get bored of it or run out of ideas.

You can see how they compare here: www.my-thermometer.com

General Discussion / New trailer layout
« on: July 26, 2018, 06:19:25 PM »
I just bought a new trailer 6x12 that I am going to setup for using for boiler installs. I am going to keep most of my parts inventory in it.
Planning on putting a workbench probably on the left side and I think shelves on the front walls. It is a V front and can't decide how to lay it out. I am wanting to have bins for all the different fittings and small parts so they stay organized.
I am having trouble coming up with a good layout because of the V front. I looked at doing angled shelves on each side or going straight across and making it deep in the middle but that doesn't seem like it will work well.
I have a lot of 4'x4'x1/2" plywood that I will probably make most of the shelving out of.
Does anyone have anything similar or have suggestions?

For Sale / 80' of Rehau Insulpex 1" ID (32mm) $700
« on: May 15, 2018, 08:44:57 AM »
I have an 80' piece of Rehau Insulpex that I would like to get rid of. It is the exact same size pex and the OD (4.3")  is the same as Logstor.
Logstor sells it as 1" ID but it is actually 32mm OD pex (26mm ID)

Looking to get $700 for it.

Located in Wisconsin.
