Portage & Main / Nozzle in firebox floor, 250
« on: January 30, 2012, 08:07:36 AM »
Hey Guys,

I'm really easy on dropping (placing) my firewood in box.  Take great care in cleaning out around the nozzle opening and yet have lots of chips/chunks spalded off of nozzle opening.  I hope repair/replacment of the nozzle ain't going to be to difficult, but probably will need to be adressed at end of burning season.

Wish to thank Marty for his guidance in cleaning out air/blower box in back of furnace!  Found lots a creosote and spent the time cleaning out and now, she runs clean!  Big difference in smokeless performance.  Going to need a box of the self tapping screws that hold the cover in place.  That creosote already began eating the exposed threads off them, that stick into the airbox.  Stainless self tappers seem like an idea.

Also notice the air covers on the 1/4 20 all-thread rods won't be around forever, as the rust from creosote assault will eat them up in short order.  1/4 20 all-threads permanently coated with the hardest dried creosote and adjustment out anymore, a thing of the past.  Re-design coming up after the burn season.

Tried wire brush and not worth the effort to get clean.  Will just put a little time in the machine shop.

Maintenance intensive, is starting to come to mind here.  ML-36 thoughts slowly creeping into my brain.  Wonder if I should have went with tried and true?  Would have been too easy though.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Advice/assistance on hook er' up!!!
« on: September 19, 2011, 06:11:15 AM »
Built first fire @9pm last night!!

P&M Opt 250.  Got plenty of condensation from the fresh filling of 55 deg well water.  Understandable, I suppose.
This morning finds it drying out, with none in the fire box, and just some stains left on the concrete.  Deem that event Normal!
Can make one wonder, "Where's the leak"???  Next...

Set controller for 170 set and on at 160.  70 plate W-W HX in basement.  Fed by Taco 008 pump.  50 some feet of the Logstor buried and 35 feet of 1" oxygen barrier pex inside.  Got to 170 at OWB and only see 150 deg going into propane boiler.
*****   The propane boiler still fires when a zone calls for heat???  So, for now, shut switch of on propane boiler.
All zones still work.   Advice?  Thanx in advance...

I cut in a tee off top of propane boiler and went to common return pipe from all zones.  Installed clapper type check valve on this line couple inches off of tee.  Common return line now goes to 70 plate WWHX.  Return from HX to propane boiler with taco 007 pump at lowest point, after HX,  running continously.   2nd floor tstats shut down, but still hit 70deg?  Menopausel wife had rough nights sleep!! (gave her my side of bed near window!!)
*****   I think maybe flowing through zones, even though check valve installed correctly???

High note....7 pcs of split got her up to temp and 2 pcs this morning to keep fire in box!  Looks like its out when idling!  No smoke!  Did smoke a bit on initial firing, but smooth right out when started gassifying.  Of course it was night when built fire, but didn't look bad at all.

Did add 1/2 pale of ashes from old wood stove in basement to floor of new OWB, as hot fire right on new floor don't seem too good.

Thanks for reading, look forward to thoughts/replys.

General Discussion / A GREAT DAY....not
« on: May 26, 2011, 08:24:38 PM »
Hey Guys,

Logger buddy calls and says delivery for me around 10am.  Near 3pm, he calls and says, "skidder broke down, not sure what's up w/it".
Fairly new, and thinks computer problem.  Find out more on Tuesday.  Will get load out as soon as possible.
OK, I'll put off long wkend of cut/split detail...

Next, Dealer of my new boiler calls and says, "boom truck broke!"  Be in touch next week for delivery.
OK, would have looked good sitting on my new pad, so no admiring my new "toy" this week...

The real kicker,  Lift broke at service station, and my new truck fell, front first and slid into wall!!!!  5 ft drop.  Looked mostly cosmetic, at first, BUT, further look shows, bent front axel, bent frame, etc...
     OK, I need a beer!!!

Don't know what to expect on the truck?  10k mi on '10 dodge/cummins SRW 3500 4x4.  Not  at all fond of the possible outcome of replacing frame, or straightening.  I just know it won't ever be right.

Nobody hurt, THANKFULLY!!!  Just in for oil change and tire rotate.  Things I once always did myself, but the local guy always did a good job and very fair to me.  Good friends and nothing they could have foreseen happening.

     Next.......

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / New guy here, well sort of.
« on: April 06, 2011, 12:02:28 PM »
In the market for OWB.  Tons of ??? but will take it slow.

I am a life member at my community fire company, and in '94 we installed a Mahoning 500k btu OWB.  Saved enough money to actually make payments on a new in '94 fire engine!  Which final payment made in 2009 so I can certainly attest to what can be accomplished with a bit of work.  There is one member who does tree removal for his living and he has taken care of wood supply since!  Good man.

Anywho, time for me to install OWB for my home.  2800 sq ft, plus 800 sq ft garage(currently un heated) and no need to keep heated every day, just for times of work or deer butchering.  But will install a bit of baseboard for times when needed.

As you could tell, my house is hydronic baseboard radiation.  DHW and heat comes from propane boiler.  DHW stored in a McClain 75 gal holding tank affair.  All works good except for the empty wallet and purse after this past winter here in NE PA.

We built the house in 2000 and its insulated well.  I did install a Quadrafire 4200 wood stove when we built house.  Should of, would of, could of, installed OWB right from the get go but most of you could see money tree was bare during build.  Anyway, 5-6 cord thru wood stove always kept LPG bill in check and we "was happy".  This year, feel like gas company just finished castrating me!  Wood stove always took care of basement and 1st floor and still does, but enough already on this yrs bill!

Started computer shopping and found quite a few different manufacturers.  I sort of ruled out Mahoning, and Shaver for various reasons, some of which I gathered from lurking around here.  But I ain't no where's close to a decision.  Most of you guys have far more experience and are certainly more current of whats available than me.

Wanting "the best", and not wishing for peeing contest between members here, what would you buy if doing your OWB over, with whats available today?  A gasification job burns less wood, costs more...and whats a good tried and true OWB?  My calculations say 3 to 3.5 winters to recoup investment if whole job were 10g or under a little.  Running into a little (little) extra money from side work this spring and want to make wise choice.

When we got the Mahoning, back 94, it had those catalytic converters in it.  They work great for while, but gunked up to darn quick.  We replaced once and then canned them.  Burns tad bit more wood, smokes wee bit more but zero aggravation cleaning those honey-comb junk.  In all these years, welded up one leak and replaced ciculators and blower motor a few times.  Really good luck.

Research will  get hot and heavy now.  Interested in hearing from a few pros on here and please don't get into the mine is better than yours crap.  Just interested in hearing what alls available these days and maybe brand names and models to heat my newer, well insulated house of 2800 sq ft.

Thank you for your truthful instruction in advance!

Bill
