Last year the old man burned in the neighborhood of 23 PULP WOOD CORD (A little over 2 semi loads worth) in East Central MN; he is heating a bit over 7000 sf (2 structures), and DHW.
So, like I said, you got to weigh out what your heating ,,,,,a small village,, or a well insulated avg. size house.
The guys doing 20 chords have help and the proper equipment

I also said "What also makes this 23 number look so large was first 6-7 cords were junky/punky birch and maple; that combined with a record setting year of cold (I know it was top 10 in recorded history, might have even broken into top 5)"

...I will repost this spring, after a more normal (not mind chillingly cold) winter and see what my dad had for wood consumption

Check out the thread on wood consumption in the firewood room.

Usage is pretty mixed........ a lot depending on insulation.

My dad does not seem concerned with the 20 cord number, as he used to have a indoor wood stove, when we lived in town.  We would go thru on average about 10 cord (1 semi) per year, heating about 1500sf liveable, and another 1000sf of unfinished basement.

So when he Quadrupled his heated/finished square footage, and his wood pile only doubled I saw it as an improvement.  Plus he now has more power tools (tractors, trailers, splitters) and grandkids, to help

In NW Wisconsin you can use 15+ wood if it's a normal winter. We are in our 2nd using our stove and still figuring the amount of wood we need. The problem is I get several times during the burning season supplemental wood by the pickup load or my 4x8 trailer that dump by the stove to burn first before using my stacked wood. Sometimes it's cut wood or it might be scrap lumber/pallet wood. I take all I can of it.

We burned around 19 last year due to the cold. I only know a chord as 4x4x8. So far this year around 8.

We get our own wood. Dump trailer stacked without sides 1.5 chords with sides 2.25 chords. So you cut the trees down buck em and load em.  Takes me about three hours unless the wife helps then 4.  After we bring it home we split it right out of the back of the trailer, maybe an hour, usually not the same day.  After we get done we just go about our weekend.

Burning has just been a part of my life since I was a child so it's just one of those things that's part of life. To me it's always been fun.
