Title: Wireless Remote Thermometer. Boiler Monitor
Post by: gandgracing on October 17, 2014, 08:05:07 AM
Monitor your boiler from the house.  I had bought this and never did end up using it.  $40 shipped

I have the same thing/set up. I put copper pipe insulation on the DHW heat exchanger on the side of the water tank. I placed the probe under the insulation so the entire probe touches the copper exchanger. The BBQ theme meter reading is exactly the same as the inline water temp gauge.

Not only that, but I checked with the company and as many as you want can be used at the same time, just set them up one at a time as far away from one another as possible.

I'll be ordering two, one to check the feed and return temps on a 50 plate FPHX coming from the wood boiler and the other to check the temps on the same FPHX going to the waste oil boiler.

I hope this question isn't too obvious, but, there are two sensors, right? One for the "meat" and one for the "oven"? So I could monitor two lines with one setup?

Has anyone strapped the sensors to pex?

Yes, you can set up two, but probably only need one.Your boiler has a gauge, so I would just put the sensor on the basement.
It will not be as accurate on the per as on metal. I tried all the different variations.
The best is to do it as I said above on the heat exchanger copper pipe on the side of the water tank. That is the first hook up as the water comes in the house.
Once you gauge your temperature drop from the boiler to the house it will probably not change, so you could just use one probe in the basement.
My lines are 9 feet deep, and I don't have any temp drop over 120 feet. So, I don't bother with two probes.
Also, don't put the sensor outside on the boiler. When it looses signal and sync you'll have to go outside and re-sync it.
It works great in the basement. I never have to reset it.

I hope this question isn't too obvious, but, there are two sensors, right? One for the "meat" and one for the "oven"? So I could monitor two lines with one setup?

Pex won't give you a true reading of your temps, I can grab the pex lines in the basement no problem, grabbing a metal line that the pex connects to is not advisable.

Mine is at the boiler.  One on the supply line and one on the return. Remote is in the house next to the recliner. It will occasionally lose signal and beep for a minute or two then re-sync on its own. A couple degrees off but still a good representation of whats going on.

Since I started using coal this has been invaluable. Saves alot of trips to the basement then outside to the stove to see how its doing.

I have my probe attached to the side arm on the water tank. I have an inline temp gauge, and the BBQ on the side arm reads the same.
