Portage & Main / Re: Optimizer 250 Nozzle

Karlk is the member who is/was fabricating replacement nozzles. I got some from him about a year ago. I bet he’s still making them.

Send him a private message - if he doesn’t respond, PM me. I’ll ask him if it’s OK to share his email address.

Can we just call a spade a spade? There is only ONE PERSON THAT IS AN ISSUE.

Do your comments deescalate the situation?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: What's normal stack temp
« on: January 25, 2019, 07:39:05 PM »
I have one of those Maverick BBQ thermometers. It has the two probes. I placed one between the steel water jacket and the insulation beside my supply line. That one reads within 1* of my aquastat, so it seems pretty accurate.

The second one is placed directly above my heat exchangers before the gasses go up the stack (I think Slimjim calls it the breech).  Seems like the most accurate place to take that reading. When the stove starts gasification, it reads about 190*. After cleaning the stove and during a full throated, dragons breath, nuclear-reactor-style burn, it reads about 250-275*. One time after a particularly busy month, I hadn’t cleaned the stove - it read 342*.  Much above that seems wasteful, like Jreimer said.

Edited to add: I’ve never cleaned my stack. Been burning since 2011.

From reading here, I understand he’s on FaceSpace but I’m not a member over there. Looking forward to his future input.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Anyone seen Slimjim?

I mostly lurk in the background- but have a question for slimjim.  Haven't seen him around here in quite a while. Anyone know if he's still on the site?

Fire Wood / Re: Softwood vs hardwood
« on: September 15, 2017, 08:45:27 AM »
I burn as much soft wood in my P&M 250 as I possibly can. I would say that I burn about 1/3 more than when I use hardwood, not 2X. The way I do it is just load 1/3 more in the firebox per any 12 hour period. Doing it this way avoids the problems with the lack of a coal bed. There's almost always some charred pieces leftover when I go to reload, but sometimes not. There's definitely less room for error than when using hardwood.  Trade off is that it's free for the most part and verrrrry plentiful as most people scoff at burning it. Another hard wood that I like that most people scoff at is poplar. Burns like a softwood but is free and plentiful.

Slim is 100% correct, oak doesn't grow where I am, so we take what we can get. I burn softwood in the fall until there's too much snow to go & get it where I store it and then just as soon as possible in the spring.

James.  Any snow up around the boarder, I will be up in your area later this week for a couple days.

Lol. Nope, snow's been gone up there for about a month. That being said, I did get snowed on three nights ago. Never amounted to anything, but it was definitely cold enough!

What's bringing you to the area? Work? You should stop by if you've got time.

Totally agree! I said "eff it" about 2 hours ago and burned some oil. It was 45* and damp/rainy outside and 59* inside. Needed to take the chill off!!

Jreimer...Thanks for the help I sure would like to get this fixed.

Have you tried unclipping one of the airbox clips yet? What have you got to lose?  If you're feeling adventurous, try it for 48 hours and see what happens - if it doesn't solve your problem, you can keep searching. If it fixes it, well, woo-hoo!

Larry,

I previously had a problem with water in my airbox too - in fact, it was water and creosote and it was gumming up the mechanism to the point that the flapper was sticking open - then more water and more creosote.

jreimer has given you excellent advice if you absolutely/positively have to get to the bottom of what is causing your water-in-the-air-box-problem.

But, if you just want something that's quick and easy and solves your problem, do as Coolidge says, unclip one of your airbox clips and be done with it.

I know it seems just TOO easy...TOO simple but, 2 years ago, I was frustrated beyond belief with my stove problems - Coolidge very generously came to my house to see what was what, we unclipped one of the airbox clips and I literally haven't had one problem with my stove since that day.  Each time I clean the stove, I remove about a tablespoon of hard/crusty creosote from the bottom of the airbox, but the rest of it is bone dry.

Your mileage may vary...But seriously...do it!   ;D ;D

Any chance your main system is a hot water boiler? That's what I have, and I notice that there's a bare minimum that I need to burn just to keep the water in my oil boiler hot. Since you've got no extra load and your wood is pretty much the same, maybe 2 cords in that time period is your base line?

Google Marathon O701 and there are a number of options for you. Amazon even has a couple. It'd be spendy, but you could opt for overnight shipping and have it by Tuesday or so.
