Plumbing / Pump Location?
« on: March 24, 2013, 08:23:35 AM »
What are the pros/cons of locating the pump at the OWB vs. inside the house?

My system will be OWB to DWH hx to hx coil in plenum of an upflow propane furnace in the basement.  Total difference in elevation of the system from one end to the other will be 3-4 feet, and a total run distance of about 60', one way.

I have read here on the forum that it is desirable to have the pump on the supply side of the system.

Unless there is a good reason not to, I think I want to put my pump somewhere in the basement, and inline before it gets to the hot water heater.

The only downside I can think of of that arrangement is pump noise, and unless these pumps are VERY noisy that won't be an issue for me.

Plumbing / Re: Black Pipe vs Copper
« on: March 24, 2013, 07:35:04 AM »
Wow, I had no idea that copper was that high!   :o  And cutting and threading black (or galv) pipe is a chore.

My whole house supply inside is CPVC so I will just go from pex into CPVC.

Plumbing / Re: what else did u put in your "boiler line trench"

This thread has given me a lot of good ideas for my future install.

One thing I haven't seen in this thread (but have elsewhere on the forum) and a thing I am planning on doing, is to run my insulated lineset (which will probably be a typical factory-manufactured 5-wrap inside the corrugated plastic "drain tile") inside of a 6 or 8" PVC pipe conduit.  I have a source for 6" SDR22 plastice pipe for about 40 cents a foot.

Interesting.  Is there a positive way of knowing...or proving what temps an aquastat has been set to?

Central Boiler / Re: Leak

Glad to got that leak tracked down and that it wont be a huge deal to fix.

Not sure if they would work for your situation but after having a leak in a pipe under my well pressure tank, I have been looking at getting some water alarms for my basement.

Here is a couple I am considering:

I've got some 4' x 8' hardwood pallets.  They usually last about 5 years, then I burn what's left of them and get some more.

That's great, glad to hear it worked well for you.

I am considering going together with my neighbor to build a couple of OWBs, and at least one of them will be very similar to yours.  I can "weld" but he is a master welder/fabricator.

Anything you can think of that you would have changed if you had a chance to build yours again?

Fourced, is that an oxygen cylinder that you used for your horizontal exhaust tube?

How is this beast running for you?

Great job Larry, nice to see some good ol' Show-Me State ingenuity here on the forum.   8)

I am located near Mt. Vernon, got a 100 acres with more than my share of hedge on it, if you run low.

You got to take the thorny black locust too though.   >:D

Thanks for the pics Dave.

I consider my rig more hillbilly than redneck but...yeah.   ;D

Chainsaws can/need to be rebuilt?!?

 ;D

My 028 is an early-mid 80s model, my Dad got it new and ran it for about 10 years before I got it, never even had the carb rebuilt.

Air filters, bars and chains yes.  Wish I had a gallon of gas for every cord that jewel has cut.   ;)

My insurance company required 10' clearance from the house.

Since mine is an air furnace I wanted to stay as close as possible.

No UL listing since it was homemade.

No write up but I will attempt to attach a pic to this post.

I heated my shop with this beast for a year before I put it on the house.

I have a 2' x 2' 4-way diffuser on my outlet into the kitchen, the return air is cut through the rim joist and pulls from the basement, so I get natural circulation through the house most of the time, and just manually kick the blower on when needed.  I also have an outlet timer on the blower fan for control that way.

I insulated the ducts with Solarguard this year.

Crude but effective.   ;)

I ran Stihl regular oil in my 2 Stihl saws (028AV Wood Boss & 029 Super) for about 15 years, switched to the Stihl synthetic HP Ultra about 5 years ago.

Stihl says 50:1 but I mix at around 45:1, haven't changed a plug in years.  I would never run an air-cooled 2-stroke at 100:1, just my opinion.
