Checked out the thread on the other site, looks like a nice project.

Did you tie it into your existing house ductwork, or just taking it into a window?

I am on my third season with a homemade outdoor wood/air furnace also.  I believe have have around $300 total cash outlay in it (I had almost all the steel), guessing it has saved around $2500 in propane bills so far.

Not very efficient, and requires a lot of tending, but it's paid for and keeps the house nice and comfortable.

May be time to graduate to an OWB for me though.   ;)

...the down draft guys...

Newb, still trying to learn the lingo.  By "down draft guys", do you mean gassifier manufacturers?

Interesting to hear that your estimation of the Earth gang may be changing.

I had room in my breaker box to put in a 220V 40A breaker.  Attached a 50' length of 8 ga. 4 conductor and put a plug that fits the 220 outlet on my generator on the end.

I kill the main breaker on top of my breaker box and the main breaker in my meter loop when using the generator for double isolation from backfeed.

We were out of grid juice for 14 days in the ice storm of 07, it worked great.

Got another ice storm predicted for tomorrow night so we may get another chance to use it again.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Heat exchangers

Great thread here.

I (for some reason) had assumed that the heat exchanger needed to be in the plenum over the A-coil (upflow propane-fired)furnace).

That was going to be a difficult trick in my situation, installing it in the main trunk line will be a breeze.

I'm learning.   8)

Thanks!

Natures Comfort / Re: NCB-80?
« on: February 12, 2013, 10:29:45 AM »
Scott, thanks for the reply, have read a LOT of your posts since I have been here, and learned a bunch.

We have a 2 story ranch, each floor is 28x48 (1344 x 2 = 2688 sf total), but 800 sf of the (walkout) basement is an unfinished/unheated garage, and the rest of the basement we just try to keep at 55-60 degrees in the winter.  In SW Missouri, so we don't have much below-zero here, average hi/low temps in mid Feb are mid-40s/mid-20s

So I think the NCB-80 would be sufficient, even if we heat our water also.

Using a homemade wood-burning air furnace now, with propane forced-air backup.  Works pretty well but tending it every hour or 2 is a pain...but not as painful as paying the propane guy.   ;)

I will definitely check out the YT vids, thanks.

Natures Comfort / NCB-80?
« on: February 12, 2013, 09:27:55 AM »
Hello all,

Longtime lurker, looking for info about the NCB-80, and Natures Comfort in general.

Not having any luck finding much on the NC website, looks like it is a new model so maybe they haven't had a chance to update their site.

Thanks!

Joe

$1.89/gal here in SW Missouri.

There used to be an index that you could follow on propane pricing to get a feel on how it was trending, but I haven't been able to find it for a couple of years.
