Hi all! I was wondering what the difference there is in head loss between a 10 plate with 3/4" fittings vs a 20 plate with 1" fittings.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Still burning!
« on: May 07, 2012, 07:56:24 PM »
It seems funny to let the house get cooler in May then it was in January so I will just keep the fire burning. So this "mild" heating season is turning into a 8 month fire for me. I don't know what I am doing wrong, I read where guys get through a season on 6 pickup loads of wood or only burn 5 or 6 cord in a standard boiler, heating a similar sized house as mine! I am going to be at 10 cord when this is all done, even with this mild winter. Oh well, I guess it has something to do with keeping the house at 75 or the long hot showers? Anyone else still burning?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / How do they get away with it?

Has anybody read the Shaver ad on ebay? They claim their 165 is a 75% efficient GASSIFICATION boiler just because the flue sticks down into the firebox?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Wood consumption thread

I know there are so many variables it makes it hard to compare these stoves but I thought it would be interesting to try. List as much info as you can, and don't forget to tell us where you live.

I am in Michigan, I heat my house (73*)2800 sq ft, garage (55*)600 sq ft and dhw for 5. My boiler is a hawken he1000 this is its 5th season. Last year I used 12-13 cord. This year (unless March is brutal) I should be between 8-10 full cord. I strike one match in mid October and run until late April early May.

HeatMaster / Who makes heatmaster?

Is Heatmaster a spin off of Global by chance? Both are made in Winkler Manitoba, and the basic version of the Heatmaster seems very similar to my stainless steel Hawken/Global. Just curious.

Plumbing / Second furnace plumbing?
« on: January 10, 2012, 06:31:45 PM »
I need some advice on how to plumb a second water-air hx in a air handler. It is a long story so I will spare the details but, we are getting ready to finish off the rest of our upstairs addition and add heat runs/cold air returns to the current upstairs bedrooms. We currently just leave the doors open and let the heat radiate upstairs. This works fine but there is always a draft coming down the stairway. Anyway, the house is fairly large and I don't have enough cfm's in my current furnace blower to evenly heat the entire house when I add another 8 registers. The easiest way I can come up with is a dedicated air handler to take care of the second floor. The air handler will also sit in the basement with the current furnace so they will be at the same level.

Should I just run them in a series or should I run them parallel off a single manifold? I have no idea the what the gpm is now. My pump is a bell and gosset pl30 I think??? The delta t off my current hx is 20 degrees. If I split my water to each of them I would assume the gpm would be cut in half to each furnace, so would I expect the delta t to double also? Would this be a problem? As it is now I can heat my house to 74 all winter long with my water between 140-165. If I ran them in a series I could just bump my water to 185 and it would still be 165 at the second hx even if the first blower was running. The thing is, I know I save some wood by keeping my water temps lower. The other thing is I am not really adding that much to my heat load. Both blowers should not be running at the same time very often.

HeatMaster / difference between standard and E models
« on: December 06, 2011, 06:44:19 AM »
Hi guys!

As the title says, what is the design difference between the standard 5000 model vs the 5000e. All I can find so far is they are claiming a 25% wood usage reduction.
