Have to clean out my water to water heat exchanger
« on: November 03, 2013, 10:43:05 PM »

My Central Boiler 5036 has been running continuously for 5 years and 1 month.
I keep it going all summer just to heat the hot water.
My Taco Model 009-F5 Circulation Pump just died.
The plastic impeller had disintegrated and was mostly missing.
This is the first problem that I have had with the furnace.
It boiled over and I lost about 4” to 5” of water.
I replaced the water and ordered Permanganate so I can test the water to see if I need to add corrosion inhibitor.
I also ordered a gallon of 1650XL Corrosion Inhibitor Plus.
I replaced the cartridge with Cartridge # 009-021RP.
It is working but apparently the flow is obstructed.
I have a water to water heat exchanger.
My guess is that the heat exchanger is plugged up with pieces of plastic from the impeller.

I would higly doubt that the impellar has made it into the plates far enogh to restrict the flow, I would start by flushing the lines from the boiler to the plate exchanger and visually inspect the port where the wood boiler line enters the heat exchanger, remove any foriegn parts and flush the heat exchanger with commercial grade coil cleaner, it is basically a very strong CLR (calcium, lime and rust remover) if you have hard water you may want to reinstall purge ports and ball valves on all 4 ports in order to be able to fliush it in the future without removing the heat exchanger

I have never seen a broken impeller on a Taco except when the cartridge has seized and someone trys to break it loose by turning the impeller. I like to flush my exchangers backwards and am sometimes surprised at what comes out after a few years. The forward flow seems to leave eddys or pockets where junk can collect. Adding CLR would surely be a good idea too.

The impeller was completely gone.
I called the guy that works on my well water.
He said that the blockage would not be in the heat exchanger.
It would be at the first constriction which is between the pump and the shut off valve.
Sure enough, he found pieces of plastic in there.
And now I am back in business!

Hi guys. Sorry to stir up old topic but I have some questions to you.

I also ordered a gallon of 1650XL Corrosion Inhibitor Plus.

Did it do a good job? Where did you order it?

@slimjim

Would coil cleaners from Gur Technologies be good. They have several and are for industrial equipment. I don't know if those are stronger than commercial cleaners.

I'm sure they would work just fine.
