has any body heard of burning railroad ties that have been taken out

Hey beeman, i could use about 20 of those ties for a project I have going, live between Springfield and Joplin.
If they are anywhere near me and you don't need all of them shoot me a message, thanks.

I agree with Scott, I would not do it even if there is no rule against it as there is some pretty nasty stuff in those ties that I don't think anybody wants to breath, burning stuff like that is exactly why here in Maine the state government came down on OWB's as strongly as they did, let the railroad dispose of their own waste product and you should burn the stuff your stove is designed for!!!!!

People doing stuff like that is a large portion of the reason the EPA is doing what it is... There is no reason in the world to burn something so dangerous

I wouldn't do it either. I've burnt punk wood but would never burn anything with creasote in it.
Regardless if you have your stove downwind you will still breath it when you are adding wood.

100% agree....Ive heard stories personally from burning tires, garbage, animal hid /parts, if it burns its thrown in...Like Scott said its the reason why the EPA is doing what it is...Thanks to the abusive burner..The owb isn't a incinerator!!

It really isn't an incinerator, I needed to dispose of some payroll records from work a few years ago and dumped an bankers box full in my Hardy. Big mistake. Lots of ashes and took forever to burn.
Next worse thing was one year we had an over abundance of Hickory nuts in the back yard and a shortage of squirrels. So I got the bright idea of putting about 4 five gallon buckets of Hickory nuts in the boiler.
They didn't burn well either and the backyard DID NOT smell anything like when I smoke a turkey with hickory chips!!!!

well rest easy its a no go on the ties . but on the good side i did find a saw mill that said if i leave a traler i could have all the slab woud i whant for free when he gets it loaded he will call and i will bring the other trailer it when i get the first load ill post some pic

I was lazy one year and decided not to cut up the slabs.
Ended up with a mound of rotted wood. Make sure to burn that stuff pretty quick.

thanks i never thought of that looking at getting forks for skidloader will make it easer to move slabs got the fork trying to figure how to hook them to loader

Ties burn real good, make a ton of ash though, also plays hell on a chain cutting them to length.

Plays enough hell on chains and stinks to high heaven as well I'm going to let the pile of em rot, only time I burned ties when we had such a wet spell that no real wood could be had. Get off a driveway and sink to the axles on anything.
Was supposed to be one load of decent ties when they took the rails and ties out behind the farm, nobody was around though when they started hauling them in, got our one load of good ties then about 7 loads of junk.
