Title: Gasser chugging?

I'm working on the final tuning and adjustments to my gasser and I have a chugging situation it happens after a fresh load of wood or after start-up and before the wood starts turning into charcoal.
I need the primary air wide open on startup to get a secondary burn going but then to correct the chugging I need to cut back on the primary air.

Does anyone know what would cause this?

Both gassers I've owned will "chug" if my wood is:

1) Split too small

2)Too dry

Interesting my wood is.

1 small originally cut and split for the indoor wood burner.

2 really dry. 7% dry it's been covered for 3 years.

I will try some  wood that was cut this past summer and has not been covered well.
