Title: Stupid move
Post by: Roger2561 on March 12, 2017, 09:32:27 AM
Note to self; when removing ash buildup from firebox, make sure to leave enough coal behind to rekindle fire.  This morning when I went to put wood in the OWB it had quite a bit of ash buildup. it's depth was making me uncomfortable so I removed some of it.  I guess in the process of taking it out I took out too much coal at the same time.  I was doing some reading in my reading room and I heard the oil burner come on.  That meant one thing.  So I went out and sure enough the digit display was flashing FO, fire out with a water temp approaching 150.  Upon inspection, yup, the fire was out and no hot coals anywhere.  So, remove the unburned wood, put in a huge pile of kindling, touched it off and then held the primary air switch in to really get her going.  After a few minutes, I added a few pieces of unburned stuff and the water temp is rising nicely now.  The oil burner is quiet too.  Roger

I’ve done something kinda similar but more along the lines of checking it, then deciding to let it burn down just a bit more before adding any wood, then get sidetracked and just a bit turns into oh crap.

My ash is plenty high now too. I need to dig some out but it's pretty cold. Think I'll wait a few days...

Cold, seriously your in Va. I'm headed home now to be greeted by 15 degree weather and up to 20 inches of wet snow over the next 2 days.

How often do you have to take ash out of the firebox?

I take out ash every month or so but I've been running it for quite a while and it's had time to build up quite a bit of ash. And I'm mixing in a bunch of little blocks and shavings that seem to make a lot more ash.

We're supposed to get down in the teens for several nights with several inches of snow and sleet. But I know , our warn February made me a softy. My kids were outside barefoot some days.
And remember I don't have the whiskers for insulation!  :D

Stupid move? I got you by a mile.
I had a low burning bunch of coals last year and I decide to get it going. So as the fire comes back to life I leave the door open and do other stuff near by. I for got it as my wife calls for help out back. I come back 30 min later and it has shut down for hi temp and has boiled over. All was well, added water and restart it with the door closed. Never going to do that one again.

This may be a stupid reaction to your stupid move, but why don't you just remove the ash that falls down into the reaction chamber from the firebox ?  That's all that I do and I never had to remove any ash from the firebox itself

I just root the poker around in the firbox to lower the level and run it under the stainless air tube to make sure that's not plugged.

I've done that before. Flame out before not long. :bash:

I tried to open it but it is restricted to members only.  Wall of shame in OWB land could be a scary thing. I had to secure a house that the owners walked on the mortgage . I put in new locks and cleaned up a mess you can't believe. The basement had an indoor wood boiler that had leaked creosote all over the floor,  a huge mess. Not sure the brand , it was an older looking blue forced hot air unit.
