General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Do it yourself water testing
« on: September 21, 2017, 07:25:04 PM »
Hello all,

I have a couple of questions regarding boiler water testing.

1.). Does anyone conduct themselves or know of a testing kit to test all appropriate attributes of water in boiler?

2.). Once you add the manufacturer suggested amount of treatment to their boiler, how often does this last?  Can you over treat th water?  Etc etc!

Thanks guys....... gettin real close to "burnin" season down here in Ohio!  Although as I have seen similar posts today from others, it hit  92 here today.   I'm ready for some colder temps.

Thanks for the feedback, slim.  I did indeed pick your brain initially and don't regret my decision a bit.  I am hearing about 4000 sq ft along with DHW, so I feel the ole girl is doing pretty well.  I've been very satisfied with this unit.  Part of me just likes the newest technology although that might not always be the best return.  I think I will ride this out for awhile.  I do appreciate your candid position and looking at it objectively.  I guess that's why you've got such a good reputation on this forum.

Happy burning,

HeatMaster / Thinking of replacing Portage and Main BL 2840 with G200!!

Perhaps a question to slim, mlappin and others that have been around the boiler block, I am seriously considering replacing my 2840 with a g200 and wondering if I would really be satisfied with this decision.  I do like my BL but also like the idea of less wood (burn about 12 cords now) and less smoke.

BL is about 3 years old and in good shape, wondering what would be a reasonable asking price and also what I could expect to pay for a new g200.  I would do changeout myself.

More than ready, new G400 shows up in the morning at 8am.

I feel like a little kid the night before christmas.

Checked the forklift, half tank of gas.

Unfortunately picking corn so may have to wait till I can get a chance to remove ole smoky.

mlappin, I'm curious to know how you like that new G400.  I've been thinking about getting another unit (I plan to keep the BL2840 for the barn) for my house.  Looking at the G200 and the P&M 250 gassers.

Hi Oaky

I live in the Chillicothe area and I'm not sure of one in this region.  About two weeks ago though, I was up in millersburg (amish country) and happened across one.  Not sure of the name of it.  They also were a plumbing business.

200 is 9995 and the 400 is 13,495 add shipping and taxes to both

Hi Slim

I'm not quite used to you making normal appearances on the HM site yet.....miss you over on the PM site......anyhow, I was wondering what do you thing prices of gassers will do given the EPA ruling on conventionals..........I was thinking/hoping they would come down.

thoughts?

JD,

I'm a bit late to the thread but I absolutely believe you're making the right decision on size with the bigger unit, for what you intend to heat.  If I had it to do again, I would buy the bigger unit.  I'm heating 5K total sq feet (3k living, 2k unfinished basement).

I'm most likely not going to change out my unit at this point but having the bigger unit would mean that I would not have to go out so early in the mornings to feed the unit when the temps fall around "0".

Show us a picture of that thing when you get it.

Farm Boy, I am very similar to you in that I am heating 3000 ft^2 along with an unfinished (bare blockwall) basement and my DHW and largely my 2840 does the job.  On occasion when the temps drop to down around zero or below, I purposely wait until around 9 or 10 pm to fill and then go back out around 6 or 7 in the am but this gets me through the night.  For these rare occasions, the bigger unit would be nice but anything teens or above, I have no problem with a 12 hour burn time......gotta have good wood though.

What's a bit ironic about all my spending is that basically I'm known by friends & family as tighta$$.  Before I got the boiler, I had the thermostat set in the 60's, yelling at the kids for taking too long of showers etc, etc, etc.  Hell, the wifie used to run around the house in Pj's, housecoat and my wool hunting socks.

At least now with the boiler, we live high on the hog with extended showers and a comfie house in the 70's.  And the best part of all.... I accidentally learned that If I crank up the heat a little higher on occasion, I can cook her right out of those jammies and get her to run around the house in something I find a little easier on the eyes.....she complains about it being too hot every now and then..............I just tell her that it's new and I'm trying to figure things out >:D >:D

Love the feedback guys.  If I were a boiler manufacturer watching this unfold through the window, I would be taking some
serious puck 'n notes right now.  On numerous occasions, I've thought about designing my own stove as the next one.........probably will never happen but if someone ever asks, I'll give them an earful

Spending time on the site with you folks has greatly increased my knowledge and awareness of other brands and collectively this group could easily list all the pros and cons of almost any make of boiler.  The only problem is, if one were to ask who makes the best boiler....well, you can see where that discussion would go.

So here's the question:  If you had to do it over again, (and you could not buy your current boiler) what boiler would you buy?

Please list current boiler and alternate boiler you would purchase (and why).  And by the way, if you wouldn't buy your current boiler again and aren't afraid to admit it, in the interest of sharing with others, that would be great.

Me
Current boiler - Portage and Main BL 28-40
Alternate: Heat master (MF e series) I am curious about the long term advantages of stainless and I also like the double pass HX

In general, I am very happy with my BL.  However, I would want to know more about the Heat master before I automatically purchased the BL again.  I did not give heat master any consideration when I initially purchased.

Thanks, Cando

 ??? ???

Budman, you bring up a good point; however, given that I already had the 1 ton SRW, I decided to not include it.  Snuck that one in on my wife about a year ago.......my prior 3/4 ton broke down while pulling the camper  (7000 lbs.) to a weekend trip and I might have insinuated to her that, that 3/4 ton diesel may have been the problem and that for the safety of her and the family we had better buy a new 1 ton................................... >:D >:D  Does that make me a bad person??

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: OWB Efficiency?
« on: January 29, 2015, 05:34:34 PM »
Hi Jreimer,

I like your approach to determining efficiency.  I am curious as to the equation you used in determining the O2 and CO2 outputs via molecular weights.  Also, with respect to the amount of water formed as a result of combustion, I am curious as to the mass of water that's simply run through the stove with the forced draft fan (assuming the 250 has one) relative to water vapor produced via combustion.
